Title: Range day in Humboldt.
Post by: bombadillo on August 17, 2009, 12:08:19 PM
Well Skkeeter from www.calguns.net and I were out at the range here in Humboldt and had another good day.  I have been working on a few goodies here and there and got to shoot some of his reloads which performed quite well at 100 yards.  I'm now able to hit the 12" gong 10 for 10 consistently and am happy with that.  I would like to get something capable of past 600 and that will be in the future when funds permit, but for now it is what it is.  Here's a 100 yard 5 shot group:

And the range itself.

Anyway, just for fun wanted to post up a range session.  Best group of the day for me was a hair over .75 MOA and CTC and I was surprised with that.

.338 certainly qualifies as 'BEAST' in my book.

Side note:  a guy at my range is waiting on his tax stamp to pick up a 'nam era M16 with full auto :o :o and another just got his for a Russian machine gun of some sort.  The range is going to be full of the sounds of fully automatic weapons fire before long.

If you've never seen the punch of a .338 lapua at 1200 yards, you're missing out.  They shoot flatter, faster, and have a huge amount of energy at 1000+ yards.  That thing was pretty nutty with a nightforce 4-15x50 scope on it.  Top notch stuff.  Its actually now sold but he's waiting for the money.  Bought another monster in .338 lap mag.

Out of the muzzle they have something like 5k lbs of kinetic energy and supposedly can penetrate 5 interceptor vests.  .338 is wicked.

Yes it is, it had a muzzle blast from the side that I seriously thought it was going to knock over my AR on a bipod it was that big.  Its just painful to be anywhere near the thing but behind it while its being fired.  We cleared off 2 stations either side of us while shooting that thing.  All in all, its fun and i'm slowly getting my co-workers to lean toward the dark side and get out to the range with me.  I'm turning libs into gun loving conservatives one at a time.

I have a Browning A-Bolt in 270Win with a muzzle break on it.  People hate to be near me when it goes off cause of the concussion from the muzzel blast. I can't even imagine what a 338 Lap would do.

3/4MOA is a good group. That's actually about what my Browning does. I just ordered everything to start handloading, so we'll see if I can do any better. My goal is 0.5MOA or better.

I just signed up to longrangehunting.com.  Those guys routinely take game at 1K. I'm trying to learn some techniquest from them. I believe a few use the 338 Lap as a hunting round.

Wow, game at 1k is amazing.  A .338 Lapua would be a head shot only kind of rifle for game if they want any meat left when they're done.  Its pretty sure to be gone otherwise.  I guess if they are going for trophies, organ shots would be good if they're just going to mount it so there is an up side to that too.  The 3/4 MOA was with cheap Centurion m193 55gr ball ammo too.  Nothing fancy just basic military style ammo.  I shot some handloads from a buddy that did decent, some match black hills .223 69gr and some federal gold medal match ammo 69gr sierra match king bullets that it liked as well.  I'll have to start handloading to get the kind of accuracy i'm actually looking for but that will come with more time and money.
