Title: SV650S - 2000 vs 2003?
Post by: danci1973 on October 07, 2003, 12:12:28 PM
Hi all!

I'm looking into getting a used SV650S, but I can't find official Suzuki photos and specs for the 2000 model.

What are the differencies to the current (2003) model? One that I can see is the fairing design...

Thanks, D.

Fuel Injection on the 2003 model and some plastic and tailight changes that I know of for sure.

And vaccum formed frame with 3 welds as opposed to tube secion aluminum with gazillion welds.
Honestly like the 00 SV... much more personality. And if you damage the frame you can weld up tube secion aluminum to it and not even look odd...
Cool.

I'd think the new frame would make the bike much stronger than the old one. Rather have plastic covering it all up anyway so doesnt matter to me!

i've heard nothing but praise for the original sv frame, i can't imagine the new one could be that much better.  i like the fuel injection, but you could save yourself $2k by getting a used one.

Better looks I think. It's frame has round tubes instead of squareish and the tail  has a much more beefy and substantial looking profile. I've seen them both side by side. The older one looks more ballsy IMHO. More like a Ducati then the new one. Performance? Beats me, probably the same. Quiet as a sewing machine stock.

From the 2000 to the 01 also saw the addition of front preload caps also.

The 03 also scored an oil cooler. For what reason I dont know as over heating and engine life was never an issue.

The 03 also got a radiator taken straight off a Mack truck that sticks out so far at least the plastics and frame wont get so much damage. There have been numerous rads busted on even a stationary tip over.

At least the 03 is real easy to get rid of the rear mud guard unlike the previous models.

Airbox also went larger by a couple of litres also.

I cant rememer the figures but the 03 is up slightly on power but whether that warrants enough to buy an older second hand or a new one would be up to you. Nice bike either way.

Hopefully suzuki turn around one day and put a full fairing on it like the GS for next year.

i would like the old one better but FI sounds very promising.....i wish i could get the old one fuel injected.....powder coat the frame and some other bits ( i heard sv's rust easily?) and ill be happy....is it the same engine as the previous model? maybe the old one can be fuel injected?

i have an sv650, and i've never heard of any rust issues, especially since the frame and engine are aluminium. you can pick up an older style for a good bit less than the newer one, and i think the older style looks better.

Suzuki had pics of a full lower fairing for the SVS models at the bike shows this year.  I've seen places online selling it already (but only for the SVS1000 model...) Since the fairing is nearly identical, I don't see what the holdup is on the 650svs lower.
