Title: long legs? get aftermarket pegs
Post by: intergalactic on August 23, 2009, 07:23:20 PM
I installed the $17 TL1000 eBay pegs from the Wiki and finally rode today. Besides being lighter, they do allow something like 3/4" more legroom. Which is a big help when you need a little more room. And cheap.

Just sayin...

Agreed, I have been giving advice to tall people to do exactly this, it does make a big difference. I took it one step further and moved the rear sets back two inches which makes it even better. My legs are not even that long (I'm 6') so I dunno how some of the bigger guys do it.

buy a rear suspension GSXR suspension  which raises your seat 2".  Good for tall people

That mod doesn't change seat to peg distance. Only seat to ground distance. SO it makes no difference when you are actually riding. It does when stopped.

Did you need to adjust the brake or shift levers at all?

I'm 6'2" and find the bike a little cramped after 30 minutes of riding.  Sounds like this will be perfect for me.

Yeah, what's the situation with that shifter and moving the pegs back 2 inches? I'm assuming if you're taller that your feet might be bigger than mine so you can reach anyway? I feel like moving them back would put the shifter too far away.

I wonder if any other bikes have shifters that are an inch or two longer than the GS lever. Is that clamp a pretty standard size? You'd have to push to lever farther, but mine is a little difficult as it is, so the extra leverage wouldn't be bad.

I did just the pegs.

To me it seemed that moving the pegs back would make me have to bend my knees more.

So I have a GSXR shock for ride height and firmness. And pegs for a bit more room when riding. The pegs help keep me from cramping.

I also have a .95kg/mm front spring setup. At 175lbs, it is a little bit stiff. But a lot more stable than stock. I probably need less preload.

I think you guys are onto something.  I'm 5'9" and the stock set-up is JUST ENOUGH.  I'd like a little more leg room too for longer rides.

These are some bad pics of it but i can make you some removable highway bars that work great. I have these on now and need to do some clean up and was going to paint in truck bed coating. This set works of the fairing brackets. But i made some bars for a friends older gas and made some removable brackets and finished that set off nice. they remove in about a minute. will try and get better pics tomorrow.

How does one go about moving back the rear sets? Are they adjustable or did you fabricate an extension bracket? Ive never actually looked at it.

You can plainly see in the picture the extension bracket I fabricated out of steel and painted black. My feet are a size US 11 and quickly got used to the new shifter position, I might even find the stock position cramped now. I'm sure if it was a problem you could come up with a solution like the guys who shorten/lengthen the side stands.

Keep in mind that this mod is impossible with the stock exhaust. I have the luxury of a srinath flange with bolt on that changes the bend of the pipe, leaving enough room to extend the rearsets back. This gives the bike a much sportier position when paired with clip-ons. When I finished this modification it finally felt like I was riding a sport bike.

How's the vibration on the new pegs?  Depending on how my feet are positioned, the stock pegs can get an annoying vibration in them.  Would these increase that?

I don't notice any extra vibrations, but I didn't with my stock pegs either. These definitely won't decrease the vibration as you are losing that rubber buffer under your feet.

Ahh. That sucks. Im never going to spend the money on an exhaust as the stock works fine for me.

Just put the new pegs in a few days ago.  It's definitely a nice improvement in terms of leg room.

To shift I need to move my foot a little more, but I think it's actually an improvement based on how I shift.

The brake pedal took a little getting used to.  It's easier to apply more rear brake than you mean to at first.

At certain RPMs I was getting some annoying vibrations in the stock foot pegs.  So far, I have not noticed that in these new pegs.

Overall it's a great deal especially if you're on the taller side.  My only complaint is that the silver color could be a little less bright to better match the silver/gray frame color.  But I'm not looking at them when riding, so it's not a huge deal.
