Title: Tires for Track day.
Post by: Bluehaze on August 24, 2009, 05:14:44 PM
Reading GS Jack Wiki on Tire it looks like  BT -090 is the winner for Track use. Has anyone tried any better tires for track use on stock wheels?  I used Perille Sports Demon stock sizes on the track and very happy with it.  I just wanted to know if i should now try the BT -090 for my next track day.   Its only 6 dollars price difference for the front and rear pair between BT and Perille.   I will wait a day or so if anyone has any input then i think i will just buy the BT -090.

AFAIK the BT090 is the only real track tire that comes in such small sizes. So that makes your choice easy if you're looking for an upgrade from the demons. I'm on my 2nd set of demons and think they're just fine for track, but I might try some 090s next season as well.

If you get the BT090 make sure you get the right one.  There are 2 different styles of BT090 in 110 and 140.  Only one will work.

One is for the supermotos (you don't want this one) and is tube type (labeled TT) and designed for wider rims and tubes.

The other (you want this one) is a tubeless (labeled TL) and for our narrower rims without tubes.  It isn't even listed in the Bridgestone US website anymore, but is on their bridgestone world website.  It's hard to find and you usually can't get it from your dealer or online retailer.  The only place I have found that can get them is stickboy racing.

Well as much as I wanted to buy from the guys that you stated indeednap.. they were charging $271 plus $15 shipping.  I couldnt go that high. I emailed that motorcycle link that i posted above and ask them about TL vs TT and they stated that they must put down TT if it is tube and that radial do not come in TT..  weird but for $86 dollars less, i agreed and purchased it from motorcycle superstore.

I'm running the new Bridgestone BT-003 RS track day tires at Brainerd for June & Aug. CRA weekends.  And love them.
You can get them in a 110 front & 140 or 150 rear.

Bluehaze - That's wierd.  Bridgestone lists both the TL and TT as radials on their website.   Let us know what shows up (It'll say either tubeless or tube type right under the size on the tire sticker)  If it says tubeless then you just saved me $86 dollars next month.  (I'll owe you a beer, unless I like what bigjimmerone has to say :D)

bigjimmerone - I was curious to see how the 003 rs would work.   Good to hear from someone who actually has used them.   Tell us more!!! :D

ineedanap - Now before I start talking about the tire's.  I tell little about the bike.  My GS is a full race bike that will never be a street bike aging.  The Suspension has being gone thru to work for my style of riding.  I use a 110 in front & a 150 in the back on stock rim's.  Plus I use tire warmer's.
My style of riding is to run it like it a 125 gp bike.  Late braking & super high corners speeds.
Now for the tire's.  With the warmer's I'm able to run at 100% When I get out on the track.  There is no lap or two to get the tires up to temp so they will start to stick.  I'm able to go deeper in to the corners before braking & to hit the gas a lot sooner in the corners.  I'm able to trail brake well on my knee, with out no problems or worry of the front letting go.  Now this maybe some talk be me about these tires, but as far as I know.  I have the best lap time on a GS on the Short Course at Brainerd with a 1:55.3.

As of right now.  I got 10 sprints and 2 all day practice on my tire's and plan on running them in Sept race weekend sprints and a 5 hour Endurance.

jeez, I was thinking of ordering another set of Demons and bikebandit had a good price on them at ~$220 shipped.... but damn, these 003's are $201 SHIPPED from Moto Superstore. I'm not sure I'd know what to do with real tires!  :o   I didn't realize they'd replaced the 090. The tread pattern leads me to assume they might be even more aggressive and less happy if it rains.

Maybe I'll be reporting soon on how these hold up without tire warmers and how they respond to some street use

Well Indeednap.   You were right.  Customer Service  FAILED.

I got it. All excited.  Then  right on the front label.  TUBE TYPE.  That good for nothing customer service rep.  All he needed to do was freaking ask the parts people to take a look.

But i wasnt too sad.  They emailed me a 20 dollar gift check for purchasing the tire.  So i created a return label,  and bought the BT-003 this time at the same price but 20 dollars less.    :) :)  So i got the tires i want for $180.

Thank you bigjimmerone for letting us know about that one.

ok so the 003 are the way to go for this bike, no question!

After running Demons for many track days, and getting pretty used to them, it took me a little while to get used to the different feel of the 003s. They fall over a little differently, it was a little unsettling at first. But once I got used to it, I was able to get away with a lot of sh*t that the demons wouldn't have put up with. Ran VIR Patriot on Sunday and North course yesterday. Patriot was no contest, I know that track and rolled everyone.  ;) But even on North course, those tires helped me keep up with the group. I wasn't even getting passed on the front straight since I could charge down the hill up to 17 with so much more speed. They never did anything but stick. In fact, my body position was starting to get sloppy/lazy since the tires let me get away with so much  :nono:

Thanks bigjimmerone !

Did the tires feel like you for got the wheel spacers on the first lap out on them?  Or this me on a new set.
But I'm glad you like them.  And you are right.  You can get a way with so much with these tires.  I can't wait for next weekend for the 5 hour Endurance Race at B.I.R. on my buddies  GS

What size tires did you use?

The lowest rear size is 140 for the 003.

I ran an 003 today at Beaverun in my race series.  I actually had to put a 120 on the front instead of the 110.  I ran this in combo with the 090 in the rear in the 140 size.  I had no problems with this front tire, it made the bike turn in just a bit slower but that helped with the twitchiness.  I will def run a 120 next year, it is a lot easier to get this tire.

I've used a few sets of the 090s but haven't tried the 003s yet.  How much different are they?

I noticed a big difference.  Now it might be because I was running a 120 on the front for the first time ever instead of a 110 but the front felt so much more planted.  It was like riding a different bike.  Now that I know I can run a 120 on the stock rim I am set for next year, I had to special order the 110 a couple weeks in advance (and pay for them in advance) but I can walk right up to the tire truck and buy a 120 off of the rack as they say.  I ran a bt090 on the rear but did not notice a big difference with the 003 up front.  I will probably stick with this combo next year since my tire guy has not started carrying the 003 in a 140 for the rear.  In my opinion it was worth an extra $15 to buy the 003 front versus the 090 front.  I can't wait for next race season to start so that I can try this tire out on my home track, there is a big difference in the track surface versus Beaverun where I tried that tire at...

Also, are these good for the GS? Or are they TT SM tires?

Spaceboy,

Ask your tire dealers if they have any of the BT003RS in stock (Be sure to specify RS! They don't make the standard BT003 in our sizes.) From everything I've heard, it's a better tire than the 090, and it's certainly easier to find. The 110/70/17 front and 140/70/17 rear fit the GS perfectly. They offer exceptional grip and longevity.

Plus, they slide very predictably and recover easily.

Woops, I actually meant these two:

And they don't have any 003's in stock. They've been on backorder for a while.

I'd be willing to help out, but I live in California. I'm not sure how economical it would be to have the tires shipped from here.

What I would recommend, is that you contact Viets performance. I pit next to them at the AFM races; they are stand-up guys and I know for a fact that they keep BT003RS in our sizes, in stock. If they are willing to ship to you, it would work out perfect. Otherwise, let me know and I'll forward the tires along.

Cali is a bit far, but we'll see. Thank you.

If there is anyone closer that would be willing, give me a shout  :icon_mrgreen:

Edit: Local forum pulled through for me. Thanks guys.
