Title: Hello! to GSTwin.com, and first tech question.
Post by: axentz on August 26, 2009, 11:13:32 AM
Well I picked up my first motorcycle approximately 3 weeks ago, and it seems I have struck gold by choosing to purchase a GS500F (2007). I'm geeked about finding this resourceful site, and I thank everyone here in advance for helping to make my experience with this incredible machine that much greater!  :thumb:

Now to the tech- I'm sure I have much more to sit back and read that is already posted here, but from what I've found I am considering rejetting and dropping in a factory replacement K&N. Already has a Yosh slip on (sound was one of the main attractions of this bike at first), so with this configuration I am considering the following scenario for this rejetting process: #20 pilots, 62.5 mids, and 142.5 mains. No new needles, no washers, or any other work done.

Again, this is like brain surgury to me, and like anybody I'd like this learning process to be as successful and painless as possible on my new beauty for the first run. Any comments are greatly appreciated; now to look  for parts!

Thanks all!

According to the wiki that would be a good place to start but many people have done slightly differently from what the wiki has as far as jetting because it will partially depend on your elevation and riding style as to what is the right jetting for you.  Buddha on here sells jet packs and i am sure he will either read this post and find you or you can send him a pm and he will sell you the proper jets for your setup.

Since you said the PO had already put on the Yosh exhaust i would check the carbs and see how he has them jetted as he probably already did a rejet.  If the PO had purchased a dynojet kit then the needles and other parts would have to be changed back to stock in order for the jets from the tables on the wiki to be the correct jets to use.

I would also check and make sure the PO didn't arleady change the air filter if you haven't yet cause it is common to change both the exhaust and air filter at the same time when upgrading.

Congrats on the bike.

Sounds like you're already ahead of the game if you've got plans for jets and everything else. I had to bug people about jets forever to figure out what my bike needed. It turned out they were jetted properly, and the carbs just needed a thorough cleaning to get the bike running well again.

This website is definitely one of the better parts about buying a GS instead of other motorcycles. There's plenty of people who haven't left and don't even have a GS anymore. Everyone gets a long well, which i can't say for a lot of other motorcycle forums.

from my understanding the K&N drop in replacement filter is a lemon.. I know, I have both a lunchbox and a drop in, and the lunchbox has waaay more filter area than the drop in, not to mention the lunchbox deletes that stupid airbox..

incidentally, I have a drop in K&N filter for sale, 100 CAD shipped. new in box, never used.

I have the lunchbox also and am completely satisfied.  It was only about $35 and gets rid of the whole airbox and was a simple install.

Thanks for the tips all; unfortunately I have already purchased a K&N drop in from auto zone, and they had to special order it so there really is no return (no lunchbox for now). Spoke with PO, and it sounds like they did NOT rejet the bike when the Yosh was installed. Probably running quite lean already then, but I've been getting unbelievably good mileage as well. We're ~600 ft above sea level here, so nothing really dramatic.

I'll keep surfing for similar installs.
