Title: Wow!! Most amazing upgrade to a GS ever!!!
Post by: XealotX on August 29, 2009, 01:19:49 PM
Today, on a whim, I filled my completely stock '02 bike with 91 octane gas over the normal 89 octane. Wow, what a difference!!!!

I'm pretty sure it's putting out 80 HP at the rear wheel now.
It's getting over 90 MPG.
It's faster from 0-60 mph by over 3 seconds!!!
The brake light is 17% brighter at dusk.
It stops from 60 mph in ten feet less distance!
The mirrors vibrate less.
The seat is more comfortable.
It requires 3% less choke to start.

Now I know what all you haters are thinking...that I'm only imagining these improvements...but it's true!!! I snapped a picture of my bike after the fuel fill up with my cell phone camera and immediately noticed the bike looked faster. PICTURES DON'T LIE!!!

This has totally given me the upgrade bug now. Tomorrow I gonna install a four tooth sprocket I pulled of a John Deere tractor, the muffler from a Peterbilt semi truck, increase the spark plug gap from the manufacturers recommendation to 1/4 inch, a nitrous kit, LED turn signals, and an R6 shock. No Hayabusa will be safe.

I had the same thing happen to me except i couldn't even get a picture of the thing it was so fast. I then regretted all the mods i did put it back to stock and even added a fairing because i needed to cut the wind better at the speeds i was going then i got off my friends r6 and back on my gs

From my observation, topics on this forum seem to be cyclical in nature. Currently we are in the--

"I just (installed/changed/removed) my (insert minor mechanical work here) and now my bike is better than ever!!!!!!!!! (add "LOL" or "OMG" for extra emphasis)
Example: "I just changed the oil to synthetic and now my bike is better than ever!!!!!!!!!! LOL

For those of you who have mechanically "upgraded" your bike, or, are about to... I,  your humble servant, offer my two rules for determining the awesomeness of your "upgrade".

1. Most of the impact of your "upgrade" is completely in your own mind.
2. If you observe an increase in performance that is not in your own mind, see rule number 1.

Note how the rule states "Most of the impact". I'll grant that 10% of upgrades have a performance change...5% for the better and 5% for the worse...

hater.  let us be excited that us newbies on mechanical stuff can actually make something work better.   at least in our head its better.   :thumb:  i mean.. unscrewing the rear wheel and putting it back is freaking amazing to some of us here with GS. So just the virtue of us being able to do that,  means the bike has to be better than what it was.  What better place to brag than here.

I think NOS stickers also add 80% more throttle response by simply being applied to a GS.

Now, if you add 3.4 oz of acetone and 1 moth ball to every tank full of that 91 octane gas,

you will see another 50 % gain in performance. !!!OMG!!!

And you will increase you gas mileage so much, you'll have to pull over and dump gas out

the tank or it will blow up!!!!!LOL!!!!

I defintely know that this one works, and also, if you put in NOS energy drink in your tank instead of gas, you will DEFINITELY be the fastest guy in your group!!!   :icon_lol:

And if you carry a piece of red paper with you. You'll need to add a tank bag with 100 pounds of weight in it to keep the front wheel on the ground cause of all the extra speed you'll get OMG LOL WTF!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  :woohoo:

You'll be going so fast even the radar signal will have a hard time keeping up. You'll have to wear Teflon clothes cause normal clothes will burn up in the air friction due to your speed ROFLMAO!!! Serious.

You'll need to replace your visor plastic with bullet-proof Lexan the bugs and small road grit will hit with such force.

Carrying a piece of red paper is the cheapest and best mod ever and ever and ever and ever.  :thumb:

And your bikes performance will increase directly proportional to the improvement in your riding skills.  A stock bike is much happier with a skilled rider aboard.

+1 ...

However there was a post a few years ago where someone said they were going to change their oil and brakes this weekend and it was a 3 day memorial day weekend if I recall ... and someone else asked ... and I swear it wasn't me ...

So what are you doing the other 71 hours.

Gimme a break, most of us have mechanical ability far beyond what we give ourselves credit for. We venture into the abyss for usually 2 reasons. Encouragement from sites like this, and discouragement from bad shops/mechanics.

Cool.

I have to agree. I love learning about mechanics and this bike is a little simple idea for a newbie gear head. Also what some shops charge for simple things is just outrageous! Knowing every bolt and piece of metal on the bike is something to take pride in. I'm sure you all have the friends who have expensive stock rockets and bring it to the dealership to get the oil changed and are caught scraping the chicken stripes off the tires. :icon_lol: :cookoo:

I can make fun of myself though with questions like, should i re-jet, what about cutting the subframe etc etc. I can see how the more experienced folks are rolling their eyes but hey there's new blood here everyday so get used to it!

From the guy with only 18 posts. Wait a second thats 18,615...

:woohoo:  Someone that can put the respect I have for this website into cleverly fashioned sentences. Also I'm not impressed by the cost of a mechanic or the jobs they so eagerly do wrong. Although 109 cycle in Toronto is very helpful and they don't *Richard* around, the majority of shops I've had the pleasure of hearing about or going to just screw things up (including Suzuki overfilling my oil and leaving no free play on clutch lever). So in turn I would like to say Buddha and the rest of you, thanks for running this awesome website and pretty much breast feeding the world of GS487 riders.
