Title: New paint project - Pics Included - Cafeboy Cowl Added
Post by: Grommett2k on August 30, 2009, 11:17:19 AM
Yes, I am painting my bike again. This time was necessity. My son was over last weekend doing some yard work and when he went to get the hedge trimmer off the garage wall, he dropped it and it hit my tank. No dents, but a hellacious gouge/chip in the paint. I felt worse for him than the bike. I had to assure him that it was ok, and that all he did was give me a reason to repaint :D I just asked him to kindly move the bike next time.

I wanted to let you all know about this product I got at the auto body supply store. Clear coat is called Spray Max 2k. It is a two part rattle can.  You have to depress a plunger in the bottom to release the catalyst and then you only have 24 hrs to use it. At close to $20 a can, make sure you are ready to go before activating.

This stuff went on awesome. It is the best finish I have gotten and in reading about it, it is supposed to be good at resisting chemicals, UV, etc. Here is a link about it. I recommend it. http://www.repaintsupply.com/pd_2_part_2k_aerosol.cfm

Here are the pics. Duplicolor products used in the prep. Color is Duplicolor Metal Specks - Burnt Copper. Then the clear is the Spray Max product. I think I am going to leave it as is sans logos or anything else.

How many coats did that one can give you? I like it but I need a close up of finish if possible.

I got 4 coats out of it. That was on top of the Duplicolor-Color, and Duplicolor clear. I will try and get some close ups. The metal speck looks great in the sun.

Yep. I used the Duplicolor Red MetalSpecks for mine and even though I got impatient and skimped the last little bit of prep on a couple of small dents, that paint does really well, I didn't use the 2 part mix though. Just the Duplicolor stuff from Autozone. There is a point where the color just "pops."

Yeah, it looks better than I thought it would. Here are some more pics. I don't have the greatest camera in the world, so the close ups don't do it justice.

oh my wow. That looks pretty awesome for home grown. So its paint and 2-part clear from wal-mart type store? Is it runny (It doesnt seem like it in the pictures) and if you wanted to could you wet sand then buff?

thanks for info and yes it really does look good

Looks great!
I'll be painting soon and I'll keep the products in mind. As of now I've got a really crappy semi-gloss black with bubbles in it, and a nice purple gouge where the previous owner dropped it.
Where did you get the twist-off gas cap?
I'm thinking about going the same direction because I'm terrified every time i open the tank because the key is so worn and old.

I got the clear from a place called Wesco. They sell autobody repair and paint supplies. I went in and talked with the guy and he recommended it. I didn't buy then because it was pricey for a can. I came home and looked it up. Saw some good reviews, so I went back and got it.

Pretty sure you can wet sand and buff. I gave it 24 hours and then used some rubbing compound.

so now you need to write-up:

the seat, what is that, just a re-cover or .... ?

did you repaint the tail ? what color/paint type ?

are those stock bars ?

what signals are those ?

the exact process you used for that supa-dupa-bass-boat-slap-mama-it's-got-metal-flake!!!-paint you used.

:) love the orange, it's rockin, and you gotta good kid if he A) was actually doing yard work B) felt bad about scratchin your bike

thanks for not raising (and dumping on society) a self-absorbed jerk like so many people do ! :D

the seat, what is that, just a re-cover or .... ? Stock seat. That is a Cafeboy seat cowl. He might still be making/selling them.

did you repaint the tail ? what color/paint type ? No, those are stock black tail plastics.

are those stock bars ? Superbike bars, black.

what signals are those ? Cheapy aftermarkets

Man that is a beautiful color.  very very nice.   That artist was just ready to come out and it took your son to bring it out of you.   So now lets do a ride again with SteveO.  MT. BAKER FTW!!!!

Wow, that color looks awesome, especially for a can job!

If you don't mind me asking, where did you find the belly pan? Or did you custom make it?

Don't mind at all, I got it from these folks http://www.superbikestore.com/ he is selling glossy black and carbon finish bellypans for the GS.

When you go to the site you will see my bike when it was yellow. He asked if he could use my pics for his website.

One more bump for ya, sweet bike. Love the total combo, very SV-ish

Have you thought about removing the rear grab bar? I took it off on mine and think it looks a lot smoother.

Pax don't really use it since its behind them, my cargo net can hook on the tailpiece.
