Title: front brake caliper question.
Post by: Bluehaze on September 10, 2009, 10:35:14 AM
So i changed my brake line . Now the front brake "air vent"? (Where you put the hose in to bleed) Bleeder vent?  Anyways. whatever the name seems to be somewhat leaking. What i mean by that is i can see wet liquid around it. but not enough to actually drip off. Seems to remain just under the rubber thing that covers it. Is this normal? Should i not worry about it.

I think i can still turn that vent thing tighter and i have already done so but i am worried i am going to strip it if i keep going some more.  Liquid still forms just at the base of the area  so i think i can still keep turning. When tightening that vent screw.. is there a worry of stripping it?

Example the brake line screw .. it tightened it and up to a point it stopped turning and even when i put a bit more pressure it would not budge.. so i was pretty confident it was as far as it would go.  Is that the same concept for the vent screw? Its just so small and fragile looking i am bit worried.

It's the bleeder nipple.  I turn it with a 3" long open-end wrench. (6mm if I remember right)  You won't break it if you only use a short wrench.  Tighten it until it doesn't leak when you squeeze the lever.  If it's too loose it'll of course leak and it can suck air into the system when you let go of the lever.  Make sure you get all the air out first.  You'll know the air's gone when good lever feel is restored and no bubbles come out of the bleeder nipple.

so another weird question here. upon tightening further. i found a weird thing.  when i put on the rubber cap. and i push it in..  i can see airbubble coming out of the nipple. where it screws into the calibper. so  its definitely the air that is getting pushed out of that hole and to the side.. is that normall?   so i tried it again. i put the rubber cap back on and sure enough air bubble as well as some liqued comes out of the side of the screw thing.. wtf..  what is going on in there. its as tight as my 3" and hand can make it. any input.. i dont know if that liquid is the brake fluid..i can only assume it is.

Try putting teflon tape or thread sealant on the threads, also check that the sealing serface is perfectly smooth and clean on both the nipple and inside the calliper. if not replace it/them. the bleeder should seal with little force.

i can do that. i guess that means i have to take out all the liquid again. so brake fluid will not eat away at taht teflon tape? that is the most sane option i think i just thought brake fluid will eat away at it.
