Title: '02+ Kat wheel work for rear swap?
Post by: O.C.D. on September 14, 2009, 10:27:31 AM
Been reading a lot about this and is seems that an '02+ wheel will work.  I just want to make sure as they are cheaper than the slated '98-'02 wheels.

Thanks guys

yes...just use the GS cush/sprocket carrier and depending on the tire used, shim the sprocket and maybe space/mod the brake arm. Not really that bad though, i used a bandit brake arm with no mod.

Wow, finally an answer, lol.

Ok, I am glad you stated this, but I have a couple more questions.

Do I also use the GS rotor or do I need to source a Katana rotor?  I found a wheel I am going to bid on but it has no rotor.

As for the bandit brake arm, what year would work?  I have found these:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=370248205335&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/1996-BANDIT-600-REAR-CALIPER-BRAKE-TORQUE-ARM_W0QQitemZ170319418770QQcmdZViewItemQQptZMotorcycles_Parts_Accessories?hash=item27a7d41592&_trksid=p4506.m20.l1116

I also found this Katana arm, would that work?
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=250496730344&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT

Thanks for the help.

Would this wheel work if the bearings were changed?  Seems to be the only issue I think.  If that is true, then you have many options and not just Kat wheels.  Hell, who wouldn't replace the bearings anyway?!

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/JV2618-SUZUKI-SV650-1999-99-REAR-RIM-WHEEL-TIRE-ROTOR_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQ_trksidZp3286Q2ec0Q2em14QQhashZitem3ef5c113caQQitemZ270411043786QQptZMotorcyclesQ5fPartsQ5fAccessories

Are there any years of SV650 wheels that would not work?

sv650 wheels might work but regardless, swap the Kat bearings out with GS ones if you are using the GS rear axle. Bandit arm....i'm not really sure i had two bandit arms on hand, one was a 1200 and an older 600. I ~think~ i used the 600 because it's a short arm. I had to shim by one washer but it works fine.

Using a 160 tire there is very little clearance between the chain and the arm. In fact, it may be under the 'recommended' limit, but it's not rubbing (swingarm is non-issue)

Cliffnotes:
Use 98+ kat wheel
Use GS bearings
MUST USE KATANA or Hayabusa REAR ROTOR (5bolt vs GS's 4bolt)
Use GS sprocket carrier/cush
Shim the back of drive sprocket with one or two washers depending on how wide of tire
Brake arm, you are on your own. Bandit or bend your GS one (shop can heat it with torch and bend for clearance of tire)
Use the GS axle, spacers

Got all of that, but I am undecided on some things still.

The 98+ Katana wheels are the same as the SV from what I have found.  Therefore, can you not use a SV wheel and install GS bearings and be good to go?  From what I can tell the part numbers are very similar if not nearly exact.  I ask this because there are %60 more SV wheels out there.

SV rotors are also 5 bolt patterned.  Without certainty it seems that they are the same as the Katana as well.

Why not get an SV650 wheel/rotor combo, add gs bearings, Katana brake bracket, GS cush/drive, shim it up and have the same thing as a Katana swap?

Someone on here has to know this?!  I thank you Psyber of course as I know you have done the Katana swap.  I think I am on the right track and would love some more feedback.

I just can't buy it and try, but like I said, from research it seems that this is feasible?!?!?!?!?

No one has done it. You would probably be the first.

i almost want to say it will work... except that the rear axle on the SV is different than the Katana IIRC. IF the outer diameter is the same as the GS/Katana then you are gold...provided that the rear rotor has the same offset and is the same diameter as the katana/GS (katana is actually a smidge smaller than the GS)

according to this thread it should be straight forward as the Katana wheel

http://gstwins.com/gsboard/index.php?topic=40075.0

just try to see if you can cross reference part numbers on the rear wheel by some parts fische. If intercompatible, then bearing selections are a breeze.

As you can see near the bottom there are sv and Katana's that use the same part number.  I think this would work?!  Hell, if that is the case this would make it much easier for everyone who pays higher prices for a Katana rim.

according to this thread it should be straight forward as the Katana wheel

http://gstwins.com/gsboard/index.php?topic=40075.0

just try to see if you can cross reference part numbers on the rear wheel by some parts fische. If intercompatible, then bearing selections are a breeze.

So, just swap the SV bearings to Katana bearings and you should be golden.  I am a hairs breath away from ordering an SV setup now.

Just need to confirm rotors as well........................

are katana axles the same as GS? if no, then you need to use GS bearings

I didn't want to start a new thread, but I wanted to get something clarified...

I just picked up this Kat wheel from a guy down the street, FOR FREE!!!  :icon_mrgreen:

I don't know what year it is or what specific model it's from, but I just wanted to know will it work? I know I need to swap out the bearings for the GS ones, and use the GS spacers. Also I know about the cush/sprocket, and spacing the sprocket.

As for the brake control arm (because I WILL be using a 160 tire ;) ), I read somewhere that you can use a Bandit brake arm, without modding it. Is this true? If so, what year/model do I need so I can do that. I'm limited on tools, that's why I'm looking for something besides torching/bending my own.

you probably read somewhere in the posts above on this very thread re: bandit torque arm

i'm using an unmodded bandit arm. it doesnt rub, i shimmed the rear sprocket with two washers. it doesnt rub. But both the chain and the arm are VERY close to the chicken strip of the tire. I'm not worried.

that free wheel of yours, will work. it's 98+ kat

Nice find there!  Looks like a 98+ wheel so you are golden.

The GS, 1st gen SV and Katana all use the same rear wheel bearing... no bearing swap required.

The 1st gen SV rear wheel is the same as the 98+ Kat rear wheel.
Title: Re: '02+ Kat wheel work for rear swap?

dgyver - would a second gen wheel work as well?  They are compatible as far as I can tell.
Title: Re: '02+ Kat wheel work for rear swap?
Post by: dgyver on September 16, 2009, 09:40:36 AM
The bearings are different on the 2nd gen SV.
Title: Re: '02+ Kat wheel work for rear swap?
Post by: O.C.D. on September 16, 2009, 10:36:24 AM
So a second gen SV should work if the GS bearing s were put in then?

What is the outer diamter of the GS bearings?  Is the OD for Suzuki bikes all the same?  If so a GS bearing set would fit I would think.  Then use everything else off of the GS and mount her up?!
Title: Re: '02+ Kat wheel work for rear swap?
Post by: dgyver on September 16, 2009, 11:08:40 AM
They should be the same OD. Look on the online parts fiche diagrams to confirm (Bike Bandit, Ron Ayers, etc). They usually have the bearing size listed.

I got GS rear wheel bearings, $15 and ship for 2, but the coolest thing is the mother of all install tools ... the coolest and best install tool ever. Its free loaned out, with purchase of bearings, just return to me when done.

BTW OCD, you'd save $2 if I can ship it with your jets. Basically 15 for bearings and 8 to ship em, and the jets get to ride in that same box free. Shipping be $10 for bearing tool and bearings, but I'll move the $2 from the jets shipping cost.

You install it and send me the tool back.

Cool.

Ok, so it seems that I am right so far.  I can get a 2nd gen or even first gen SV wheel and simply use the GS bearings then?!  If it is that easy why has no one else done this?

Title: Re: '02+ Kat wheel work for rear swap?

Yea OCD, you're the only one ... the first ... no one ever ... ever ... you're the first to think of fitting other bike parts onto our GS ...  :cookoo: ...

Anyway with the 17mm bearing ID wheel you dont have to use the GS bearings, you just leave its original bearings in it, they are identical to the GS ones. With the later SV/kat wiht 20mm ID you use the GS bearings in it.

Honestly, 02+ wheels tend to be cheaper just for the pain of bearing swaps ... much like the 89-96 kat legs are harder to find. GS'es ironically have really taken the supply of kat parts to a drought stage. Being unchanged for 20 years does that sometimes. For a few $$ in bearings you can save 40-50 bucks+ on a wheel.

Cool.
Buddha.

One more question (sorry for the thread-jack  :icon_confused: ) ...

This rotor will fit my 98+ Kat wheel, right?

It's listed for these models, but it doesn't give years:
GSX1300R Hayabusa
GSXR1100
GSX600 KATANA
GSX750 KATANA
SV650
GSF600 BANDIT
GSF1200 BANDIT
RF600
RF900

I'm assuming it does, but I just want to be 100% before I go ordering parts that don't work, haha.

SV wheels generally carry a higher price than Katana parts. Not everyone knows the SV and Kat rear wheels are the same.

Only reason i picked up a kat wheel was to help a forum member's sale and have buddha powdercoat it white.

Pick up whatever wheel floats to your doorstep at lowest cost...hopefully in the color you prefer. We shouldnt be sitting on an internet board bickering about things that have been previously discussed in the past. So let's all go out and ride before temperatures get too cool.

2005 GS500F main wheel bearing:
B1 25X62X17 BEA
25X62X17
3097850-001

2005 SV650 main wheel bearing:
B1 25X62X17 BEA
25X62X17
3097850-001

2005 Katana:
B1 25X62X17 BEA
(25X62X17)
7359326-001

my1992 GS500:
B1 25X62X17 BEA
25X62X17
471546-001

Odd, they have the exact bearing dimensions with different part numbers.  So even an SV would not need new GS bearings?!
Title: Re: '02+ Kat wheel work for rear swap?

2005 Katana rear rotor:
DISC,REAR BRAKE
7256057-001

2005 SV rear rotor:
DISC,REAR BRAKE
1104013-001

1999 Katana rear rotor:
DISC,REAR BRAKE
518036-001

1999 SV650 rear rotor:
DISC,REAR BRAKE
518036-001

The 2005 part numbers do not match, but the 1999 ones do?!  That being said I think it is safe to say that they are all the same for all the years.  May have different part numbers, but overall they are unchanged.

Anyone with further input?

Ok, here is a gen 2 SV wheel on the left with rotor.  On the right is a Gen 1 1999 wheel and rotor.  I highlighted the differences.  It appears to be the same but the older rotor has a lot more metal mass to it.

Here is a 99 Katana rotor:

The '99 Kat rotor is identical to the SV gen 1's.  I doubt Suzuki changed rotor diameters on the gen 2 SV's.  I think a modern SV wheel with the same bearings already installed with this different rotor is the ticket.

I will, I will.  Need to win the damn thing first, lol.  Debating using the auction tire or just buying the two new Metzlers for the FE swap as well?

Got a HUGE hole burning in my pocket for the swap.  Gonna be a great winter project:

SV rear - new 160/60
GSXRfront end swap - 06 I think
GSXR '02 wheel to make the spokes look like the SV
Ducati full back half replacement
Painting
etc....

Can't wait as the FE and rear wheel is all I need.

I cannot lie, your bike is a example I am following.

Psyber - did you use the '02 axle for the front wheel or the '06 axle?  Are they interchangeable?

Also, is the 1000 front end different than a 600?  That is one thing I cannot find out.

Thx

axles should be the same 2001+

if i recall, gsxr 1k and or hayabusa forks may be shorter than 600/750's

you definately want 600/750's because these are closer to the GS length. The lower clamp will be at the top of the clampable area on the fork. There isn't much room to play with regarding the fitment/length of the forks.

I am using a sv650 rear wheel.  I used the bearings from the sv. used the gs sprocket carrier.  bent the toque rod, and spaced the sprocket to clear my tire.

I beleive it may have been a first gen mine came from though

I was just about to bid on a complete front end off an'08 GSXR1000.

I searched for a while and cannot find the fork length.  Does anyone know where to find the specs of 600/750/1000 forks?

Is the difference a big factor?

I believe 1000 forks are plenty long enough. The sv1k guys use em all the time and sv1k forks are plenty long for GS.

I found a great deal on a front end and was about to buy it when I red what Psyber posted.

Hey Buddha, do you happen to know if the '09 GSXR1000 has 320mm rotors?  I have got to match a wheel and rotor combo to the 1000 front end.
Title: Re: '02+ Kat wheel work for rear swap?

Well, I was two minutes too late.  The auction for the 1000 was bought out with BIN.  I am sad cause I spent days figuring out what I would need to complete the swap.

For the same cost I can build up a 600 FE.  So I bought the 600.  Now I have to part hunt to complete the 600.  Oh well I guess.

Back to the point of the thread, the rear wheel.  I am just going to buy a SV650 2nd gen for cheap and make that work.  I basically am going to have a brand new bike sans the motor.  Hell, I might as well swap that out too, lol.

the k4/5 forks are about 5/8" shorter in length than k6/7... while slightly longer, it's still going to reduce the rake on the bike unless you REALLLLY push them as far down on the upper tripple as possible. that being said, as stated before, the lower clamps are going to be higher up on the fork than if mounted on an SV/GSXR. up to you, you can always get those crazy expensive fork extenders made for those tl-r/s guys who swap gsxr forks in. this also allows for clipons to be clamped above the triple.

also check out swatt raised clipons (50mm). they may be pricey but they are easier to find than tl-s clipons. i have a set of 3.5" rise i'm trying to pawn off to get a set of 1.5" riser
