Title: Anyone Got a Trailer or Truck and want to help me get my 1st GS500E NY/NJ
Post by: handtius on September 20, 2009, 09:38:37 AM
Hey Everyone,

I'm new here. Been checking out the site for about 2 weeks now. Been looking at GS500E's and I think I finally found one. The only problem is it's 2.5hrs away and I'm a newbie to bikes. If anyone is interested in lending a helping hand or want's to make a little extra cash, let me know. The bike will be going from Elmer, NJ to New City, NY. Google maps has it at 2:38, but that's without exact directions. If you can help, make me an offer.

I can also rent a trailer from Uhaul if you have a hitch. Please, help a man get his first bike.

-Ryan

Worst case you could rent a truck or a u-haul.

I suggest checking out home depot or lowes for trucks, if i remember they are about $13 an hour

I have done the vast majority of my bike hauling with a rented trailer.  If you trust your current four-wheeled vehicle, even if small (I used to use a dodge shadow, 2.5L 4 banger), you might consider investing in a trailer hitch.  I think mine was about $100 with a wiring hookup.  Trailers from U-Haul are like $20 a day, and mileage doesn't matter.  Trucks can get crazy expensive when you tally the miles.  Even a small car can pull a motorcycle trailer without drama.

That's what I was thinking, but I'd need to order a trailer hitch, which might take a while and I want to pick up the bike this week. Thanks though. I was literally just googling that.

You can rent a truck from Enterprise for about $70 w/unlimited mileage (usually in a 3-4 state area) Gas and all you would be out prob $100-120

I rented one w/ unlimited mileage "in  PA, WV and OH"  :icon_mrgreen: I drove it from PA to LA and back to get my first GS !!!  :icon_twisted:

Best part was it was a BRAND NEW  F150 Quad cab w/ only 300 miles.. I took it back w/ almost 4K in less than 2 1/2 days  :icon_twisted:

So, you can just put the bike in the back of the truck? Do they supply a ramp or anything to get the bike in the bed? I've got some muscles cause I eats my spinach, but that bike a little out of my league (a lot out of my league).

no one will provide a ramp for you...  find someone local to borrow or rent...

Does the bike run and would riding the bike be an actual option or does it need to be trailered or towed?

I've done it but it's not the easiest or safest way.  When I did it we were lucky because we had a hill we could run the bike off of onto a ramp to make the angle not as steep.  Best bet by far is borrowing a truck that can tow and renting a drop-gate trailer.  Sooooooooooooo easy that way.

No, It needs to be insured and I'm new to bike so my first ride isn't going to be a 2-3hr ride on a highway.

That's my problem, can't find anyone with a hitch. everyone's got small cars now, especially near the NYC. My friends anyway.

Yea, you would need a ramp or a hill to back up to. I just backed the truck up to a nearby hill  :thumb:

Wait. Wouldn't you need both a ramp and a hill?

not necessarily, think loading dock.

My vote is for the smallest enclosed u-haul truck, they have a low deck height and a built in ramp.

Uhaul trucks get VERY expensive because they charge by the mile + a rental fee and gas!  :icon_twisted:

ok if you can get a friend to go with you, rent a cargo van from enterprise in NY for about $50

you drive the van back and your friend takes your car.

then you drop off the van in NJ
