Title: help needed lost ignition key
Post by: manoj on September 21, 2009, 10:04:47 AM
yesterday I lost the one only key for my 89 GS,the ignition lock had worn out ,so the key sometimes used to come out even if it was in on position.I lost the key most probably while filling gas at a gas station or on the ride.

Was able to open fuel cap later with some other key but its not long enough to be used for ignition lock
I called up all local locksmiths but they all said they cant do duplicate motorcycle key,I don't have the key code tag or owners manual .

where will be the key code located on the ignition lock(am not sure whether the lock is original OEM LOCK)
what are my best options
Does anybody have a spare key lying around or ignition lock for sale

thanks
Manoj

Someone was going through this a while ago before, and had a locksmith cut him a new key, don't remember who though. It was sometime this summer so I'm sure if you searched you could find it without too much researching.

I'd say your best bet might be to see if anyone on ebay is selling a spare set. You'd be lucky if you could find the whole set. The gas cap doesn't have the locking nut on the inside, so even if you don't open it you can just unbolt it and replace it with another, or just find a keyless gas cap. You'd also need your key to release the seat, but if you can get it off once by pulling off the undertail or something, you could just hook up a latch or pull cable somewhere so you don't need the key to get that off either, then you wouldn't have to worry about too many matching keys, and all you'd have to find is another ignition and key.

If that's the case, I bet there's other Suzuki ignitions that would fit fine, or you could just bypass the ignition and hide a toggle switch somewhere. I've seen more kids do that lately, but that all depends on what kind of area you live in, and how many people regularly see you start and shut off your bike.

I lost my key, took the bike to a locksmith (luckily just across the road!) and he cut one to fit the seat lock, he wasn't sure if that would work the ignition as that has more tumblers but it was fine.

for the seat lock, you can dissassemble the lock, and remove the tumblers.  nobody but you and the gstwins community would know the difference.

yea, remove the lock and take it to a locksmith, that's what my room mate did with his sv650. just bring the core with the tumblers and they'll make a key.
