Hello GS riders,
Yesterday a buddy and I got the '02 GS running! Some 87 Octane, a nice clean tank, cleaned out jets and emulsion tubes and she fires up with the choke wide open.
Uh oh, the choke! If I close it all the way, the bike dies, no matter how warm it is (I assume this could be a couple of different issues) but if I set it about half it will 'idle' around 2.5-3. I put idle in quotes because it's not a steady RPM; at times it will drop to a near stall and at others it will rev high. One theory is the seal between the carbs and the cylinders, so I'm going to take the tank off and tighten up the fasteners.
That's the air/fuel issue, there is one more which is way beyond me.
There is a kind of mechanical 'clink' coming from the gearbox/transmission area of the bike. More forward than aft, and it's not the heavy metallic bang of a misfire. It really just sounds like an occasional and slightly unsettling 'clink, clink.' Any ideas?
Anyways, I took it for a spin around Washington DC last night and had SO MUCH FUN. It's a responsive bike, and handsome, and the headlights are nice and bright. The only thing my Ural has with that is... handsome! Of course, they also had the same license plate number, somehow... ;)
Alright, I'll keep you posted... I am already thinking about mods for next summer :)
Peace,
Syzygy
PS Best storage options for the tribag? I know I saw a thread around here somewheres...
Sounds like your carbs have clogged jets. Disassemble and clean. There are many good posts here and on thegsresources.com that deal with this.
Good work! Congrats.
Rode it around DC again today... I f%$king love this thing, even if it's got a few bugs that have me stymied. So much fun, so light, so maneuverable, so VROOM!
Peace,
Syzygy
I think you are not really done until Buddha is done with you. Buy the parts from him and you get more zoom. Esp right off idle.
