have been busy and project purple rain has gotten pushed to the side of the garage, but have been starting to make time for it again and I am in the process of working on my undertail to seal up and create some storage and a place to mount my cdi (not sure if that is correct but thats what I am calling it.)
Anyhow I need a measurement from the top of the tire to the underside plastic peice on a stock setup.
I didnt measure mine and now that my subframe is cut and moved I am unsure of how much room I really need.
I do have the Kat shock on there so that would assumably limit some of the trave and create some bottoming resistancel but just trying to see where a stock one is so I can determine where and how to design the undertail.

6 - 1/2 inches, on a stock setup with stock (I think) tire size (130-70/17). I've always been curious as to how much of that is excess of what's needed, but have not figured a good way to wind the suspension up to fully loaded while being able to measure. Can't just pull the shock to take the spring force off, as the shock is part of the mechanical linkage. It seems likely it's an inch or two more than is needed (barring clearance for mud and snow, but there are other problems with riding a GS in mud and snow), but I really can't tell for sure.
GS wheel travel is 4.7" front and 4.5" rear with oem suspension components. If you have altered shock or links you'll have to adjust for that. With stock rear suspension just measure distance from rear tire to inner fender and subtract 4.5". DoD#i's measured 6.5" would indicate there is 2" clearance left. I lowered my rear 1 1/4" with longer links and have never bottomed out and I weighed as much as 255# riding it that way, down to 220# now. :thumb:
My current 150/70 Roadrider rear tire is 25.8" dia and oem 130/70 BT45 is 24.4" so I use up another .7" clearance there, must be getting close to touching so I better keep on going with the diet. :icon_lol:
