Ran out of gas, again?

You only need to run out of gas once to figure out your usable range

There are so many factors to consider, that we can't give a really accurate answer.  Assuming the bike is tuned up and running well and everything else is normal you could expect anywhere from 40 to 60 mpg.

till it runs out again  :cookoo:

put a gallon in it, ride to a gas station, then fill it up. set petcock to on, and reset your trip odometer.  when you get 100 miles on it, put gas in again and reset your trip odometer.  lather rinse repeat, lol

One gallon?

Screw that. What a waste of time riding one gallon at a time. Fill up the tank, put the fuel to On and ride until you hit Reserve. Switch to Res, find yourself a gas station and tank up. Reset trip meter after tanking up. Repeat.

Can't afford a full tank of juice in one go? Solution = stop buying Starbucks for a few days and you'll have your tank of go go juice. Done. Then enjoy the ride until next time res is hit.  :woohoo:

I agree with Michael.  I fill-up every 200 miles or so and my GS has never run out of gas.  My bike goes 220 miles on about 3.5 gallons, which leaves 1 gallon left.  My bike has the smaller 4.5 gallon tank, which is quite big enough, I have no idea why Suzuki decided to expand it to 5.2 gallons on later models.  Maybe so you can ride across a European country without stopping?

I also reset the trip odometer every time I fill-up.  Isn't that what it's for? ha ha!  It's a wonderful fuel gauge.  I have yet to own a bike with an actual fuel gauge and I haven't run out of gas since I was 17.  One time pushing was enough for me!

If you want to go with one gallon, I suggest you get a moped.  If you put in only 1 gallon at a time you'll have to add fuel every 50 miles, assuming your bike is stock.

Hm... so i put in 1 gallon of gas the other night because i couldnt get my bike to the gas station.

I think i put exactly 1 gallon and rode my bike for around 2-3 hrs. (During this time i didnt turn off the bike because i was trying to get the battery charged)

But in the middle of driving my bike the rpm just went down and it just died down on me. I was trying to start it up again and there was a guy sitting around there and he said he is a mechanic and the problem he sees is that there is no gas in the tank. I opened it up and saw that i was out of gas.

My question is that is it normal to run out of 1 gallon of gas in 2-3 hours? (or is there something wrong with my tank and its losing gas?)

Hey, are you the same guy that had the bike running on one cylinder?  If so, you are probably getting horrible fuel mileage if it is still only running on one cylinder.  Also let us know the miles you have ridden, not the amount of time you have ridden.  I'm a big guy so I averaged about 45 MPG on my GS.  Good luck!

You don't measure fuel economy in minutes, you measure it in miles/gallon so if you have 1 gallon we need to know how far you went. In the city you should get a minimum of 40 miles per gallon. However, remember two things:

a.) You have a reserve: If your bike runs out of gas switch the petcock to reserve when you run out of gas and find a close gas station
b.) The GS has a very flat bottom tank: This means two things
1.) If you are already on your one gallon reserve you won't get your full range out of it because the flat bottom tank can't get all of the fuel to the petcock
2.) Even if it looks like there is a lot of fuel in there, there isn't! I learned that one the hard way.

Your trip meter is your gas gauge. Go fill the bike up all the way (on the center stand) and then ride it until you hit reserve and then calculate your miles/gallon. The number you get is how far YOU can go on YOUR bike with one gallon of gas. End of story.

This is not rocket science mate. If you get around 50mpg from your GS, and you ride about 50mph, it will last one hour on one gallon. If you ride 25mph, it will last 2 hours. :icon_rolleyes:

No, i am not the same guy dude.

HOw many miles? i bought the bike and it had 9550 miles... now  it has 9600.... u can say almost 50-60 miles...i filled up the tank twice .

I am just confused because last time i overfilled it and gas was coming out. Now i put in 1 gallon and was riding in the city and a lil bit on the highway.. The total amount of time i spent was around 1-2 hours (not sure) I guess i must have went over 50 miles or something...

Yeah.. when i was looking in the tank it was all the way down.....

unfortunately i filled up the tank the other day without checking this forum. I am going to do that next time i am out of gas!

(damn! i will have to push the bike to gas station again)

Just fill the tank to the bottom of the filler neck sleeve, not the very top of the tank.  Reset your trip odometer to zero.  Ride until you hit reserve (or for 2 hours, or whatever you want....) then refill the tank to the bottom of the filler neck.  Take the number of miles on your trip odometer and divide by the number of gallons the gas pump says you put in the tank and it gives you your miles per gallon (MPG).  So if you rode 150 miles and the pump says you put in 2.5 gallons then you got 60 MPG on that tank of gas.  Always remember to reset your trip odometer when you fill up.  Once you know your bikes average MPG you can use your trip odometer as your gas gauge.  And if you notice a significant decrease in your MPG it is probably a sign that something is going wrong on your bike.  Ride safe!

I don't really think you can judge fuel useage in terms of time. Two hours at 70 on a freeway / motorway is going to be different to 2 hours at 30 around town. Like some of the other posts I generally reckon on 200 plus miles from one tank full of fuel. I get between 70 to 80 MPG. As a lot of people do, I reset the trip counter when I fill up. If you fill up less than full, mentally add an appropriate number of miles to when you are going to need to add some more.

I'm wondering if you had the main or reserve fuel selected. If you are on main and you stop in the manner you describe, switch to reserve and off you go - preferably to a fuel stop.
Shouldn't really be running out of fuel if you have the reserve to fall back on.

Also, running on reserve and just filling up a gallon at a time may not be a good idea. You run the risk of rubbish getting into the tank and possibly encouraging rust in the tank.

80 mpg?!  Are you sure about that?  Do you weigh 99 pounds and only go 55 MPH in top gear?  If I get 55 mpg, it's a good tank.  I usually average high 40s.

I put a gallon in mine eight years ago and that same gallon was still in there when I took the tank off to empty out the sludge.  So, I think the beans/fart thing is right.  The answer to your question is another question:  How long do you WANT it to last?

That's nut'n. I merely Thought about adding some juice... No. No... Actually... yes this is it... actually I didn't even think that. What I did was THOUGHT about waving an oily rag near it. I didn't wave the oily rag near it, just Thought about waving it near it. And that was 138 years ago. And the thing still runs. So it runs on the Thought of the smell of an oily rag. Talk about economical!

Tell that to people of today and they don't believe you  :dunno_white:

Its fixed now though. Got 40 mpg to my last tank and that was with a passenger the whole day. I really did get like 15 before though. I would hit reserve at about 45-50 miles. SO glad those days are over . . . .  :thumb:

Me too. But worse. You see. When I go to a gas station it isn't to fill up my bike from their underground tanks it's to fill up their underground tanks from my bike. That's because I got the bike with the Magic added and it turns air into gas. Cool

I don't believe it.  Best tank I ever had was 67 mpg, all highway and cruising through a state forest with stock engine and 17-tooth front sprocket.  Tried like hell to maximize mileage on that tank.  I guess I can believe 70, but 82?  No way.

People can get 80mpg in a civic, it's called hypermiling.

I read somewhere about a GS getting around 100mpg and I think 82mpg is difficult but possible.

My avarage is 52-54MPG thats 50% cruising on highway and 50% full throttle city. But on the last trip I took I got 67mpg cruisin on the freeway at 85mph. these #s are with my full list if mods installed. when it was stock my gs got a few mpg better

Had never heard of Hypermilers... my education continues thanks to this forum...  :woohoo:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hypermiling (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hypermiling) explains all about those Nempi-maniacs.  Some techniques are simply good driving habits, like reading the road ahead and adjusting your speed gadually... much better than having to slam on your brakes last minute.

I have a 98 GS500 with a V&H exhaust, jets, etc (my brother in law did it). It get's about 38mpg.
I also recently started riding an 07 stock which doesn't get there nearly as quickly. It get's about 52mpg over the course of the summer.
I fill up my 98 and run until I get to 150 miles then I fill up. My 07 I fill up at 180mpg.
You get better millage with a full tank than an empty one. you should always fill up.

1) 180 mpg or 180 miles?

2)  A full tank should be less economical due to the extra fuel weight.  It wouldn't be affected as much as a car obviously, but help me understand this one.

...bear in mind that I'm using Imperial gallons, not US gallons. US gallons are about 0.8 Imperial gallons. So, UK MPG is more impressive than US MPG. 82 MPG UK = 67 MPG US.
