Title: PC folks...
Post by: makenzie71 on October 04, 2009, 10:19:14 AM
I have a compaq S4100NX.  I was wondering if I could pull the 2.5ghz processor out and stab in something a bit more multi-task friendly?  Would this be a huge undertaking?

whatever processor you want to put in has to be compatible with your motherboard. i've been doing a project for school, building a PC from scratch. all we get given to us is the case. it's been a learning experience. each motherboard will take a variety of processors. (usually). first thing you need to do is research your motherboard and find out which processors are compatible. i've been using newegg.com for my school project. i haven't actually replaced a processor so i can't tell you how difficult this will be. hope this helps. i'm sure other guys with more experience will chime in.

figure out what socket that processor is, it's probably LGA 775 but i'm not sure. if that's the case you can put any processor in there that uses the LGA 775 socket. what is your pc having a hard time doing? if it stumbles doing something graphically intensive your main problem is having integrated graphics instead of having a dedicated graphics card. Also, a big factor in multitasking is amount of memory, and from what i've found you only have 256mb, which is wayyyyy too low even for xp. what operating system are you running? If it's vista then you need AT LEAST 1GB of memory. If you need memory i have a ton of old ddr that i have no use for i'd sell you for pennies. If you want to replace anything just ask me, it's all pretty much really easy and i can give you step by step instructions.

just wanted to rib you about pc vs mac stuff... and not being fast enough even with a 2.5Ghz (twice mine) processor ;)

oh, and ya, mobo + cpu combos are soooo incredibly cheap now, might as well get a whole new set. tiger has stuff with dual core getup for like $200+ shipping. amazing. wow. really, and dual quads for around 500. shaaaaaazam this stuff is smokin fast !

good luck ! :)

For $200 I know what I'd do...but I can get dual core 1.8ghz (twice as fast as my 2.5 single for some reason) for $40.  I just don't know if you can simple swap that kind of stuff out....

depends on the socket for your motherboard

Damn I only see single core processors for the 478 socket...so far.

Well further research says that the 478 was specifically P4 monoprocessor...I don't suppose it would be something like spark plugs, would it?  Everyone has a different part number?  Would a dual core processor that fits that socket have a different number?

i found this: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819116027 The socket number is a motherboard specification.(i could be wrong on this). But, I do know, that if the socket number on your motherboard and the socket number on your processor are not the same, they will not go together. Do a bit more research but from what it looks like to me, if you want to go from the processor you have now, to a multi-core(duo or quad) you'll have to upgrade your motherboard as well.

yup you are correct. and the ram is pitifully slow tbh. time for new one. although you could use alot of the equipment in that unit to offset hte cost on a new one

i'm currently doing a mock pc build project for one of my classes. we've been "contracted" to build a pc from scratch for a "customer". all we are given is the case and monitor. and we've got a "budget". $600. I'm learning that if you expect to build a pc for cheaper than one you can buy at the store, in most cases, you'll be suprised. while building your own pc will not really save you money, you'll actually get a much better computer. you'll be able to pick and choose components and get a better quality machine.

well i built mine for less than 6, got my quadcore, psu gpu, ram mobo and HDD as well as my monitor, os was the only thing that made hte migration from last build

specs:

monitor: HP w2007
case: thermaltake matrix
mobo: asrock
psu: thermaltake tp 600w
cpu: amd phenom 2 x4 940 ( 3.0 ghz x4)
ram: ddr2 800 4gb
os: xp mce

yes usually teh wholesale discount is roughly 10% on parts, , that being said, you can save alot IF you paly your cards right, many OEM stuff leaves alot to be desired as far as OC abilityy. which is irrelevant to most ppl except those who game, or are into vidoeo production etc, or want to squeeze out every bit of power they can
and jserio get an OEM build of an OS, most places require a purchase of otehr equipment to do this, since you are bilding one, you can do it wiht ease

psh, i built mine for $550 and it will play ANY game out today on max settings at 60fps or more

Proc: Core 2 Duo E8400 Overclocked to 4.0Ghz (faster than any intel core 2 quad except for the extremes thanks to E0)
Mobo: Gigabyte EP45-UD3L
Memory: 4GB GSKILL DDR2 1066
GPU: ATI HD 4870   (i was amazed when i bought this a year and a half ago at the performance increase from a X1900XTX
Case: CoolerMaster Centurion 5
OS: Windows 7 build 7600....... shhhhhhhhhhh

Newegg FTW!
I paid less than $450, but I skipped the stand alone GPU since I don't game
Proc: AMD Phenom II Triple core 2.6Ghz
Mobo: MSI 790GX-G65
Memory: 4gb Muskin DDR3 1333
HD: 320GB WD
Case: Enermax ECA3070BS w/ 400W power supply
OS: Win7 build 7100 (was using Ubuntu)
Already had a 19" lcd monitor, speakers, wireless mouse and keyboard

Yama, I don't think you can get a release candidate anymore, at least not through legitimate channels

Mak, as others have said, you're probably SOL if you want a dual core with your mobo.  Seems like the mobo - processor mounting changes as new processors are released.  Maybe  you can find a newer used mobo/cpu combo that can get you what you want?
