Title: 2009 GS 500F won't start
Post by: EricSorensen on October 08, 2009, 11:18:42 PM
A friends GS500F won't start via the starter. She washed it with a bucket and rags. Her Dad charged the battery and still not cranking. It will push start though. Where are the fuses and/or the starter relay on these bikes? I have an old GS450E 1983 but I'm sure things have changed a tad in 26 years. Any tips to check real quick?
Thanks,
Eric

Happened ,let it dry out ,could be shorted switches/starter...

Kill switch. Sidestand. Clutch. Starter.

Sit on bike in neutral with stand up, clutch pulled in and kill switch not-killed and press the starter. If nadda, as if the battery is totally dead even though you got lights and horn, then as Affschnozel said... let it dry out.

Oh.... pics of the bike too please. That is the price of "tips to check real quick".

Check the cables on the switch under the clutch lever.

More info would be good too... when you say its not cranking, is there any other noise?  Do the lights dim?  Since it can be push started I would venture to say that all of the safety switches are functioning properly (or not at all :cookoo:) - or else the engine would die immediately after starting.

That is true with the sidestand switch.

BUT IF you could start the bike - that's debatable - with a malfunctioning clutch switch/ detached cables, it would continue to run.

I vote clutch switch.  But to answer your question, the starter relay is on the right, beside the battery, under the plastic, in a rubber boot.  There is only one fuse.  Well, there are two, but the spare fuse is in the afore mentioned boot, so don't let that fool you.

Thanks for all the posts!! I have the flu so I've been a bit down. It took all of 20 seconds to find the issue. Connector came off the clutch switch. Put it back on it fired right up!! Poor girl felt so bad and promised to bring the bike over soon for a full going through. It has almost 2K miles and has only had the oil changed. Poor bike!!
Again thanks for all the help!!!
