Title: Brake job on front? Pad recommendation...
Post by: GSrookie500 on October 09, 2009, 08:22:09 PM
I know how to do a brake job on cars, but not exactly on MC....So I noticed my front pads are low, and I lost my manual. Not sure if I can turn these kind of rotors, but is there a spec to measure with a micrometer? I was reading old posts and I was reading how ppl just replaced the pads w/o turning or replacing the rotor, but just replacing the pads and not turning the rotors is not a good thing to do on cars, so I figure it's the same for MC.

Can someone set me straight on this subject? LOL, and also if anyone knows where to buy a nice set of aftermarket pads, then that would help me out too.

Thank You  :D

Just like on cars, the rotor has a specific minimum thickness.  Sometimes it's stamped on the rotor.  You'll need a micrometer to measure it.  I got rid of my manual when I got rid of my GS but I'm sure someone will have that spec for you.

Unlike cars, you really don't turn motorcycle rotors.  There just isn't enough material.  Instead we just scuff them up (I use red scotchbrite) to knock off the glaze and then clean with some brake cleaner.

Opps, I forgot most rotors have that spec. stamped on the rotor, I 'll have to take a look at that tomorrow.........Great advice man, I'll have to get my micrometer out tomorrow. Hopefully I can just scuff them up like you mentioned with the red scotchbrite. Thank you man :thumb:

Any takers on recommending brand, part # for pads?
