I just bought a 2003 sv650 rear shock off ebay and i noticed there were no images on the Wiki comparing it to the GS500 rear.
So i took one!

Could someone with Wiki permission please grab the image from my flickr page and post it on the Rear shock page on the wiki along with the following text:

They are direct bolt on compatible, but your rear end will be 2" higher with no weight on the bike and 2.5" higher with around 200 lb sitting on both as the SV650 spring is much stiffer.

Next thing i have to do is shorten the tabs on the sv650 shock and jam it into the bike.
Just finished installing the shock, its high enough now to warrant buying a new side stand :)
To get the shock in I found it much easier to remove the rear mud guard (3 bolts, 2 screws) and take out the bolt to the lower dog bones so it was hanging free before actually taking the bolts out of the top or bottom of the shock itself.
Also sitting the center stand on a 2x4 helps give the linkage more slack to work with and you will need the extra room to squeeze the sv650 shock in.

Does that make more sense? Im trying to say the rear end now drops less when i sit on it...

So the rear end get 1/2" higher when you put weight on it? Not being an @ss just thought you got the two reverse or something.
Seamax - he is accurate in what he's saying. You're supposed to compare a loaded bike to a loaded bike.
Dry it sits 2 inches higher than a stock shock equipped bike.
Loaded it sits 2.5 higher than a similarly loaded stock shock equipped bike. AKA, it sags less.
I have made almost the same statement so many times referring to a kat shock though. No one has raised this point, but is everyone thinking I've gone coo kooo ...

Thing I have read on another thread, written by 2Twin
"When I wrote the description on how to do the mod I may not have come out as clear as I wanted too. By saying bolt on I should have said that the shock can be bolt on without modification to the shock itself but the dog arms will need to be modified.
I had it in with no modifications and it worked but the rear was raised up to high for my liking and to high to be able to use the stands.
When I cut down the tabs and redrilled the holes it did lower it down but I wanted to get the bike lower than standard for my girlfriend of only 5 foot and a bit. So I concluded that the dog arms would need to be lengthend to achieve this and that if I hadnt cut the tabs down I could of modded the dog arms to achieve what height I wanted.
So I believe yes the SV shock can bolt straight in but the dog arms will need to be adjusted to achieve a ride height that is suitable. I think I clarified this on a post before but should have asked if Pablo could have changed his site to clarify me too.

So if I put directly the SV SHOCK without drilling anything (I would really like to have my bike to be higher on the bac) or changing the dog arms , will I have to necessarily add a new side stand? I don't care about the center stand, but will the side stand become useless?
If so, do you know any side stand that could fit?
The SV shock is a very very poor choice BTW, doesn't fit all that well, doesn't have adjustability and overall its taller ... but there is a difference between the good taller and the bad taller. Its mostly the latter.
Undrilled I have my doubts it even fits.

do a search, Danny500 did a sv shock, and changed it out for something else later, although i haven't seen him on in a while.
