Has anyone tried them. I am considering getting a set because they are cheap.
Wow, what self control - stopping for the day 3 posts shy of the dreaded 1000. ;)
(You got my private message about the Cheng Shin Hi-Max 130/90-17?)

The Marquis and Hi-max re great... but they dont fit the GS (unles you run a 90 profile) The barracuda V is there in a GS size but I didn't find it to be that great for durability. Got 6K from it but cheaper so its OK I guess.
Cool.
Srinath.

I might try the Maxxis because I can get one in the stock size and know of no one else seems to have tried them. I like being the rebel without a clue.
I've got the Maxxis Promaxx Street rear tire in stock size (see http://www.accwhse.com/chengshi.htm). I went to both of my neighborhood bike wrenchers and asked about BT45s; Midwest Cycle said "nope, but check-out these great Kenda tires...". Moto Primo said "not in your size, but check-out these great Maxxis tires, they're really good." I was in a hurry, having just bought the GS, so I got the Maxxis. Can't complain: the rubber-side has stayed down all summer :thumb:
I've learned that Maxxis is Cheng Shin's "premium" brand label; although it appears that Cheng Shin are manufactured in China, while Maxxis may manufacture in Taiwan.
Sorry I can't compare it to other tires, since it's the only bike I've ridden, and the only rear tire I've used. I think GSJack commented somewhere to the effect that [paraphrase]the new Cheng Shin tires aren't nearly as shoddy as they used to be, and I use them for around-town[/paraphrase]. Maybe Maxxis are "the best-of-the-best-of-Cheng Shin", for what it's worth.
That is funny. I was just looking at the page you gave me the link for. When I decided to check and see if anyone had replied.
Thanks! for the review :thumb:
Whatever you do dont buy Kenda tires unless you enjoy the feeling of nearly laying over in every corner, I blam my lay over on my cheap tires. I dont know how maxxis tires are.
I have changed my mind yet again but I think I have finally decided to get The Metzeler ME550 in the 130/80/17 size, for $74, from RonAyers. (I am not sure why but it is an $11 savings over the 130/70/17.)
I am going to attempt to mount them myself and then take it to a local shop for balancing.
Thanks to everyone for there advice :cheers:
Balance it yourself too...
Put it in place in the back, with the axle bolt but , wihtout any spacers or calipers. Then rotate it and mark the top spot. If it stops with that same spot 3 times in a row add a wt to that spot. Repet till you get 33 tries with a different spot. Or dont balance... most good brand tires are very very good on balance.
Cool.
Srinath.
Thanks, I'll give it a try. :)
Let me make sure I am understanding you correctly.

I should mark high point by lowering chalk(A) or some writting tool until the tire hits.
If this happens 3 times in a row in the same spot, I should add a weight at position (B).
Does that sound correct ?
YUP, joo godit meng
Thanks Blueknyt, I just wanted to make sure. :thumb:
I just ordered my ME550 from parts 411. It turns out there main office is in San Dimas and they should have the tire in just a couple days. So I can pick it up and save the shipping charges.
I am all excited :mrgreen: :) :) :) :mrgreen:

It sounds like you're planning to mark the tire with the chalk while the tire is spinning. I think Srinath's idea was to:
* Spin the tire
* Wait until it stops
* Mark the high point for later reference[/list:u]If the tire keeps stopping at the same spot, then it's too heavy at the bottom and needs a weight at the top.
Keep spinning (and adding weights) until the tire stops at RANDOM spots.
Your are correct Kerry, that is what I was thinking. Waiting for it to stop does make more since.
Thanks, I am little slow sometimes and I want to make sure I do it right.
