So I thought it would be better to creat a new thread about it.
Some of us like phat ass on our GS500 rather than the 130 stock (yes you will lose torque and agility and whatnot, however I have to say I didn't feel much).
Swaping the stock rim with a 4.5 is easy, however not every 160/60 will fit (D208 won't fit). The question I asked myself was: what is the biggest looking 160/60 that can actually fit?
Jeremy Nash said bt020 and bt021 fit, are big looking and quiet look both the same. However I have made a few ressearch and I have found that the BT021 is actually significantly bigger looking that the BT020, see yourself I picture I made:
BT021 and the left, BT020 and the right. The picture is not great but trust me, IRL the BT021 really look bigger!
It has been reported M1 160/60 fit, but I have not see any picture to see if it look biggger than the BT021.
Therefore, as far as I know BT021 is the biggest looking tire you can get!
I also would like to say that no 160/70 will fit (I believe so at least), because it will touch the swing arms.
Sorry for my broken english, when I have more pictures and info I will put it on the wiki and those who wan't will correct me.
If you want to say here that it's stupid to look for the biggest 160, and that if I wan't a bigger tire I should just buy a new bike, well stfu and go somewhere else this is not the place thanks you.
I think which ever is on the bike when you look at it is gonna look bigger. if you put the right tire on there and put the left one on the side, the right tire would look bigger. IMO. :dunno_white:
Yes you make a very good point and I forgot to say, I actually saw 2 bikes parked next to each other (an old fazer and a BANDIT 600, i don't know if you have that in america) one has a BT021 and the other a BT020. So both tire were mounted.
I didn't had my cam, but it was obvious that the BT021 looked bigger! So the difference is also there when both tires a mounted.
Remember, objects always look bigger in france.
Sorry couldn't resist.
Cool.
Buddha.
I also think tread patterns have a bit to do with it. Are there any tires that fit the GS, 130mm-160mm that look really good? I hate seeing tires with square graph looking tread that looks like it came off something from 1965.
The next set of tires I have sitting in my basement waiting to be installed str Avons. They're cheap, but I didn't plan on riding the bike all that hard anyway, just wanted to get it on the road, but I ended up going with them just because they had the best looking tread pattern of the cheaper 140 tires. As much as I think bigger tires look better, even 180 tires look boring on bigger bikes if they have a boring design on them. This is the kind I'm talking about that doesn't look good:

The new pair I have looks something like this, which I think is a big improvement, even if it is only a 140:

but, you can't see it when you're riding :|
I was going to post how dangerous it to push the tolerances of your wheel clearance. There is an old school professional rider who had a rear tire blow out because it grew slightly larger when hot and struck the swingarm causing a crash. I always think of this video when I see people push the tire clearance. Engineers build space around the swingarm for a reason.
P.S. If anyone knows who the rider I'm talking about is, please post. He was doing trial runs on a track when his rear tire blew. I spent 15min googling and couldn't find him.
You can't see it when you're riding, but I definitely check out my/every motorcycle any time I go past it, and I can appreciate a good rear tire.
and just for reference, now that I look at it again, I think the tire on the right looks bigger.

Old school ? or well, 90's ... see radial tires get wider when they get hotter and the air pressure in there increases. Opposite of ply tires.
I believe it was Britt Turkington and I thought it was on the street. I thought it was in florida in the late 90's, or maybe Donald Jacks.
Cool.
Buddha.
ply tires get smaller and air pressure drops when they get hotter? :cookoo:

I only use the KAT wheel when I'm riding in the city (commuting), when I ride really cool and slow. When I go racetrack I put the stock rim...

I think he meant that plys grow in circumference instead of width...
The Bob!
Well anyway there a few ppl here that put the kat wheel+washer and no problem were reporterd yet ;)
I have a 160/60 Metzler M3 Sportec on the back....biggest that will fit for me.
If you have any picture (from the back) that I could add for the wiki think I want to make it would be great.
Here is another pretty phat tire I found:
Shinko 005 Advanced 160-60
(http://img689.imageshack.us/img689/7389/shinko005advanced16060.jpg)
It should be really pretty big because it has been reported it's a real pain in the ass not to make rub to the chain (even with the washers), Joshr08 said "I can tell you DONT go 160/60-17 shinko raven. it was a super tight fit" but actually it doesn't even really fit? "I have Shinko 160-60 on the rear of my bike using a Bandit600 wheel. The chain will rub even if you space the sprocket away from the carrier. If you space the sprocket out and it doesn't contact the center hub,the sprocket bolts will eventually break." I pm him and I am waiting for clarification.
I've got a 180. :flipoff:
:icon_mrgreen:
servus,
take a AVON Tyre in size 160/60-17.

Wow it's a great honour for me to have kim knopf, the great master of the phat tires to post in my thread
I don't speak german but info I have understood from the Strom-st 160-60 : 160/60ZR17 (69W) MT4.50 4.25 - 5.00 164 6.5 627 24.7 6.8
Wich mean with will be 164mm large! Sure that will fit?

servus,
then look here: http://www.avontyres.fr/motorcycle
yes the tyre fit on 4,5 wheel.
Thanks to commuterdude I have found a pretty decent pic an M3 160-60
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v181/Buster-NC/IMG_4213.jpg)
notice the cool plate btw.
Commuterdude did not put any washer, however unlike the M1 (M1 have a just a little bit of clearance without the washer) there is barely any clearance if not ANY clearance. He first said it was tight but then he told me by PM that it actually rub. So M1>M3.
BTO20 160-60
(http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g257/hmmmnz/PICT0223Custom.jpg)
and next to stock tire :2guns:
remember: BT021 looks larger than BT020 and both fit!
Update: according to this http://gstwins.com/gsboard/index.php?topic=47178.0 the Storm ST WILL NOT FIT.
Indeed, 160/60-17 shinko raven barely fit (with the use of washer) and is only 161mm wide. While Storm ST is 164wide!!!
