Hey guys, thats my new (to me) 2002 GS500 with 27K on the clock. I got a great deal on it and its a perfect fit for a first bike. I've posted some pictures up so people can get a look at what I'm working with. I plan on giving this bike to my Fiance once I'm done with it so I'd like to fix it up a little bit cosmetically and mechanically before she starts to ride it.
The bike came with some rash on the right side. It has a lot on the rear muffler and what looks like to me (I know alot about mechanics in general but nothing about bikes) some type of cam cover in the front right. pics below.

I'd like to take car of those two leaks as well. Its very minimal, but it bothers me anyway.
What type of oil do you guys use? Also, this may seem retarded, but what kind of gas do you use as well? Like I said, this is my first bike. So far, I've missed 3 days of work since last week because I can't seem to get off of it. I'm pretty hooked and I'm trying to get in as many more days as I can as its starting to get cold around the NYC metro area.
Also if anyone can tell me a site where I can order maintenance parts from that would be great as well.
Thanks alot for the help everyone and hello again.
Welcome to the board, and congrats on the new bike! Bikebandit.com seems to have just about every part you could ever need, although some people compain about shipping issued or having orders mixed up. I don't remember what kind of oil I used, but they sold the right type at pepboys in a gallon container in the 3 foot wide motorcycle section, which was good luck because there's no motorcycle shops around me, any of that general info can be found on here though.... http://wiki.gstwins.com/ as well as any other question you could ever have.
Make the leaks a winter project. They don't look so bad that they can't wait until the temperature drops a little bit.
That part of the engine always get scratched when the bike falls. 50% of the bikes on here are scuffed up on that cover. Just buff it out and find another of the thin metal "Suzuki" covers to stick back on there, or just cut up a beer can and glue it on to keep crud from getting in the hole.
Otherwise everything look good to go. My GS is actually my wife's as well. I kinda took over it. She had parked it in her parents shed 5 years ago, I sold my bike 2.5 years ago and finally decided I wanted to ride again, so I pulled it out and started cleaning it up.
Welcome to the forum. The beauty of our bikes is that it will take a beating and still run like the dickens so a few rashes only adds character.
+1 on checking out the wiki for the oil and gas questions. FYI, it runs fine on traditional 10w40 oil and regular unleaded gas but there are many other options. You may want to seach the FAQ as well. There are literally hundreds of posts about oil and gas.

looks exactly like mine, same year, same color, same rash.
