I know cats are slowly bred over time to have specific characteristics that people like, but I don't understand who had the though "hey, this cat would look better if it just didn't have ears" and then ran with it. It's one thing if a cats ears are too big, but that to me seems like an anoriexic person who still thinks they're fat, or a michael jackson that still isn't white enough. You just have to know when to stop.

Don't hate the poor cats, hate the idiot breeders & show judges. The British grand champion Persian from 100-odd years ago was stuffed and mounted. Interesting thing being (pictures in one or more cat books), it had a perfectly reasonable nose, not one that looked like it had been smashed into a wall at birth. That aspect has been exaggerated absurdly and far past the point of reasonable health for the cats by show breeders, because show judges have been rewarding that sort of extreme look. They spend a lot of time mouth-breathing, since those smashed-looking noses are in fact prone to getting clogged up.

The folds probably are somewhat inbred, but not in the same way - the folded ear was a random mutation, where a cat with normal ears had a litter with some folded ear cats. The inbreeding there comes mostly from a small initial population, rather than any gradual weirding out of ears over time. Their ears are more or less full-sized, but they are literally folded the way they normally sit.

If you'd like a nice healthy cat, head down to the shelter and get yourself a mixed breed (and fixed) stray.

There's a lot of dogs with similar problems, plenty of breeds that can't have reproduce naturally, like pugs. They've just been messed with so long that they wouldn't even be able to survive without constant human intervention. It's kinda messed up, especially considering people pay a ton of money for it to be done, when you've already mentioned that the best pets are all the mixed breeds at the shelter. All of my animals have been adopted/rescued from somewhere, and they're all plenty damn cuter, better behaved, and healthier than any of the random cats or dogs people spent $2000 on.

It's good to know that cats ears are just folded down though, from the picture I thought it just had little stubs for ears.

Sometimes people want just "a dog".  Sometimes people want just "a cat".  Sometimes it's bigger than that.  If I ever have another cat, it will be a scottish fold (unless research tells me temperament and what not are incompatible with our home).  I've already got an assortment of "mutts".

and sometime people feel bad paying a breeder to create one more cat when there's already millions of homeless ones in shelters due to no fault of their own  :dunno_white:

It's not my fault, either, and avoiding the "name brand critters" isn't the solution.

Well I didn't say it was specifically your fault, I have no idea if you've ever taken a cat to a shelter before, or had a cat that wasn't fixed, but in general, it definitely is a human problem.

No one said anything about specific breeds of cat, you can find just about any breed at a shelter too, but not buying cats definitely would be a solution to that problem.

I often wonder how this guy turned out, he was chained up outside of a petshop in the Greek Islands, when I was on my travels. From the facial expression i can say i know exactly how he felt, reminded me of when I worked for a big company!

I like my cat. He's a Ragdoll, though with a bit of Birman or Himalayan in him.
