Title: SV650 Tail Swap Help
Post by: TheDrunknmonky on November 14, 2009, 04:58:29 PM
So I'm thinking that with my GS stripped for mods I would like to do an SV tail swap.  It's just sexier to look at.   Which years are first and second gen? Is second gen the one with the vertical tail lights?  I have some welding experience, but am unsure as to how difficult a mod this is to accomplish.  I know i don't have the skills to weld up a subframe from scratch, so I will be looking for a complete one.  Advice?

98-02 first gen
03-09 second gen (pointy with vertical taillights)

03 subframe is slightly different than 04+.  It is steel instead of aluminum and has slightly different mounting points for the seat and exhaust hanger.  Many 03 parts look identical to 04+ but don't interchange.

I was also thinking about doing this mod too. I really don't like banana seats, and love the way an SV650 looks. I was thinking of buying one too, but not enough money right now, so maybe I'll try doing this mod.

so pre 03 it is.. the guys selling 03's online are listing them as 03+ which means i have no way of knowing what i'm really getting and for the price i'm not willing to chance it.. guess as soon i have the extra cash i'll start looking.. unless someone comes across a cheap one in the near future

I just saw a post on someone extending the subframe by welding square tubing for a GSXR tail. I'm sure replicating the SV tail frame to a GS can be done.

Huh, I have a welder and I just saw a tail section for an SV on CL(pondering...). Anyways, I'm sure it can be done.

Weird, don't know what happened to my other post, must of timed out before I pushed send.

Anyway, if anyone needs any measurements for the subframe mods I've done to fit an 04+ SV tail, let me know. I can do measurements and diagrams (in paint) and probably angles too.

Oh, and photos come tomorrow evening (bike's drying after painting, still need to finish up the stripe).

Let me know.

I just did a 02 sv tail swap.  it ended up bolting on after I gently encouraged the stock subframe off, leaving the support risers and main bar to bolt the subframe to.  and then finding a way to fit everything back up.  not an easy project, but worth it imho

03 will have a straight lower brace.  04+ will have a slight bend to it.  Look behind where the footpeg mount is in the photos.

04+  See how it bends up after the footpeg mount.  The seat is different too.

Thanks. I searched and found it. Very cool. I see ideas like that and my imagination runs wild, then reality kicks in and reminds me about money and time.

Sorry for the threadjack. Please continue.
