Title: Fork damage questions and pic
Post by: xncnc on November 17, 2009, 12:39:06 PM
Heya, I have a pair of forks that have some scuffing on them, it starts around 4 inches away from the seals.

here is a photo; it looks as if someone put these in a vise

my questions- can this be buffed out/repaired?

at the 4 inch mark will it ever reach the seals? what is the total travel?

and with progressive springs and a spacer(which i understand will limit travel?)- will it ever reach the seals?

I don't remember offhand what the total travel of the GS is, but it's somewhere around 4-4.5 inches.  Maybe you'll get lucky.  It looks to me like you already have the fork off of the bike.  Why don't you just pull the fork cap off and then compress the fork all the way to see where it bottoms out.

I wouldn't waste time fixing those tubes.  Those are nasty and replacements aren't hard to find.  That's just my opinion, though.

Progressive springs and the preload spacer that goes with it have no effect on total travel.  That spacer just effects preload.

That is dead. 4 inches will rip the seals cos GS compresses pretty deep.
Stuff some super stiff springs in there. Maytbe you can stop it before that enters the seals.
Cool.

those seem like very small damages for lack of a better word. what happens when that hits the seals? all the oil and pressure comes out or what?

what is the total travel?

Spec is 4.7" or 120 mm travel for oem front fork.

It will cut the seal, then oil starts weeping from that seal.
