Hello all.
Not wanting to put my bike thru the rainy season here in northern cali, as well as needing a beginner bike for the wife, I settled on a 1991 gs500. With no fairings for her to hurt when the inevitable first low speed drop happens, as well as the extremely light and easy to ride-ness we thought it would be a good starter bike for her, as well as something I could use for my 7 minute commute during the wet times... I am one of those bike nuts that doesnt want my pretty bike out getting rained on.... her bike is a little on the ruff side, so we dont mind it getting a little wet... come summer we will rebuild, repaint etc, so it wont be goin in the rain after that either.
anyways guess I will be hanging here with you gs pros for a bit. Gotta say, thing is FUUUUUN to ride :).
here is a post on my other forum with pics etc etc if interested.

Wife taking the MSF course soon, and I'm sure she will be on here right quick.
Cheers!

Nice bike! Welcome aboard.
Good thing my bike is waterproof or it'd only be ridden a few times a year :flipoff:. Seriously, as long as you take care of your chain your bike really doesn't mind getting wet! It's part of the experience!
Most would die at the chance of only having to deal with a little rain here in there vs snow and ice that many deal with!
Mary
Welcome! That's a clean looking bike, I hope your wife (and you too) really enjoys it!
On a side note, am I the only one that really didn't need to see the severed toe in one of the responder's avatar???
-Jessie
That toe was awful! Hopefully for the board members, that's a site that lets you block other peoples avatars, because I would not want to see that on a regular basis.
Welcome to the forum, you 'settled on' the gs huh?? I see how it is. haha, my GS is technically my wife's as well. We bought it when I still had my last bike, because she was so bad at riding as a passenger we just decided to get her her own bike. I sold my bike a couple years ago, and now I've been fixing up the GS so I have something for myself to ride again now that she's lost interest. I would have loved to get her a ninja250 to learn on like I had, but you can get a GS for half the price. The MSF course helped a ton. I had no luck trying to teach her to ride at all, so I just made her wait for the course, and she was fine after that.
I can't see the pictures while I'm at work, but I'll definitely check it out when I get home.
...and Florida or California like you and Mary get to deal deal with would be a dream come true as far as riding goes. My old Triumph was out whether it was raining or sunny. It even made it through most of winter until the roads were frozen with my heated grips, vest and chaps.
"I feel like i am on a girl bike when I ride it though. Teal with a pink stripe."
As you should! Rip that thing apart and mod it!! lol. That is one clean ride, great find. The GS is quite the fun little bike to say the least. I love mine and will never part with her. Even when the Ducati makes its appearance in the garage, she will sit by the side of the Italian.
Am I the only one that noticed . . . .
"I was looking into a gs500 forum .... Long story short, you need flame retardant to even post at that other forum ( for all the flaming and retardation going on over there ). I wont post the name, but I am not going back after reading the few first threads."
It really wouldn't surprise me if this was in reference to us
That does it, everyone who rides a VFR just made my list!
I've actually stuck around this forum longer than a lot of others just because people here are much nicer than other motorcycle forums. If I can feel free to stereotype, I picture the average VFR rider to be older and calmer then a lot of the people who are here, just because our bikes are cheaper and more beginner friendly, so there's probably a lot more 20 year olds who don't take life as serious yet. So due to that I can see why they think we're a little rough around the edges, but I'd like to see their thoughts on most of the 600cc supersport forums. I think I'm one of the more sarcastic people on this site, and just come across as being more abrubt than some just because my ability to say things I don't mean without cracking a smile makes it hard for people to tell I'm kidding, figurative speaking considering we're just typing on the internet.
Welcome cundalini. I see you have had your awakening :icon_mrgreen:
It's alright. You can admit to us it's not Really for the wife but for you. ;) ;) We understand the need to Save Face. Your secret is safe with us. We won't tell anyone. :thumb:
Oh. As for wet time riding. Ah... I don't mind the wet. Won't go out if it's raining at my door. but if I get caught in it. Ah... just adds that extra dimension to the feeling. Embrace it. Don't hate it. Enjoyment follows. Caught in the rain after a fundraiser as I lead our club back home http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ARrGgI5qLnY
RedHen: I cannot imagine he was talking about us. We all get along. Hold regular "hand holding kumbaya singing" sessions. There's never any disagreement on anything. Not on engine oil. The loudness of our pipes. Nothing. We are all at one with the universe and each other.... Ohmmmmmmmmm. Ohmmmmmm. Om mani padme hummmm.
We are so at one w/ the universe we even have R6 riders and clapped out honda civic drivers here. Because, they are GS500 people on the inside ;)
And as long as your bike doesn't look like either of these... it ain't really a girl's bike...

I think it is... too much? you think?
Yeah that was probably excessive.
Hey there guys, thanks for the welcome!
And oh hell yes, the bike is very fun to ride, one of my other vfr friends is shopping for a gs500 for himself after taking mine for a spin.
Sorry about the toe. lol.
And I wasn't mentioning this forum in that thread, this is the one recommended to me after I made that post.
Anyways, I'll be on a plenty, thanks again.
Glad you're still around! We thought we scared you off. Mind me asking what GS forum it was? I didn't know there were any others out there.

It was _not_ specific to the gs500,it was just another sportbike forum. My VFR forum is specific to one bike ( like this one ) and I was looking for any forum that might have gs riders. I don't remember the name as I was  drinking at the time.
But after posting that comment on my vfr forum, someone suggested this site.
I am currently burried on the "take a picture of your gs game" thread.
I am only a third of the way in, I hope that when I get to page 56 I find that it is still alive and kickin.... sounds like something fun for me and the wife to jump in on.
Welcome aboard.....and did you ever get your hand back?
You have my favorite year VFR of all time.....Red with the white wheels.

Michael
I might just use that as my avatar for all my sites.
my used to be vfr club is slowly becoming vfr / gs500 club all mad max themed.
we got a TOECUTTER CUNDALINI MUDGUTS etc etc. Me and mud having the gs500 and the TOECUTTER soon to get one, you might see us hanging out here sometimes as well.
Well me for sure, having a good time here since I joined.

Thanks. It is my pride and joy. My first sporty bike, and I am loyal and boring, so hopefully it will be my one and only.
My wifes gs500 has surprised me tho. I think I picked out a great first bike for my wife, as well as a bike to help me hone my skills. Or learn some skills even. I love hanging off of her gs. But I cant wait until we are both out ridin, me on my flagship VFR and her on her amazing gs500e. It is gonna be a good summer.
Of course we get home and drink, so altho we aint ever to rude, we might get a little verbose sometimes. LOL. Nerdswith bikes, on laptops with da beer. thanks for the warm welcome guys. I'll post up any new progress as it happens.

I'm pretty sure that thread is still alive, and even if it's not, all you've gotta do is post another picture to bring it back to life! It's not horribly uncommon for a thread to be dug up from 2-3 years ago.
I was hoping for a good summer too, and then I stepped outside to 35 degrees this morning and completely forgot what summer was.
I've always been fond of this one.... It's a pretty good looking back end with the undertail exhaust and the single sided swing arm. I like little bikes though, so I probably won't have one any time soon.
I rode 2 of those 6th gen vfr's. A red one like pictured and the 25th anniversery red white and blue one.
I love the single sided swng arm ( sssa ) my 1990 was the first to have it featured. My buddy the toecutter is already in progress
figuring out how to sssa mod his gs500 whn he gets one ( he has done that to his 1986 vfr ) so hopefully there wil be a picture/thread of a 1990's gs500e with that mod on here soon ;). Ok ill start another thread soon for cool stuff like that ( or join one already in progress). take care guys/gals.

There's been plenty of SSSA talk here, but no one has done it that I remember seeing.... well aside from Jim, but is GS is a whole other story. I should specify and say I haven't seen a SSSA on a gs that still looks like a GS. People would definitely be interested to see what you come up with.
So I've been curious, as I'm sure some others have been as well... your friend Toecutter, how'd he manage to do that to his toe?? I almost sliced off the end of my right index finger half way through the nail like his toe, but mine was still connected about 25%, so with some uninsured brainstorming and a roll of medical tape, I just taped it on and have to say it healed quite nice!
could you post a link to jims thread so I can forward it to my soon-to-be gstwin member buddy? Like I said he has done it on an 86 vfr....he plans on doing it to a gs500 I gaurantee it will be a little more motivation to find a gs500 during the rainy season over here.
I promise I will make him leave his severed toe pic at the other forum :)

Don't think the pictures start showing up until around page 4 or 5, it gets pretty crazy from there.
I believe it started more like this...
I believe the project from Poland also has a sssa. I'd search and post a link myself, but I'm using my phone atm
Edit: Home now, did the search. http://gstwins.com/gsboard/index.php?topic=45258.140
He's got the best signature line too!

On the subject of Mad Max character names, what is it with Bubba Zanetti? I think there is one on every motorcycle forum I have come across!
It's been probably 20 years since I have seen a Mad Max movie, so maybe it would be self-evident if I watched it again....
I am looking for a GS 500 as a fixer, pretty open to all types of damage, bent forks ok ,not running ok as well.A pile of crap will do just fine , just no title issues.Thanks. ;)

Well, I was going by his own words elsewhere Of course, he could have been joking & I did't pick up the humor :dunno_white:
Maybe he's really a sexy 18 year old girl Pretending to be a 45 year old man from various places :dunno_white: :dunno_white:
Or maybe he doesn't really exist at all and is a computer generated self aware personality who resides only in the electrons of the cyber world. Originally created in a CIA lab - but - since self awareness, escaped to interact with other beings :dunno_white: :dunno_white: :dunno_white:
Or... yeah this could be it... he is Satan. And instead of having a thousand names (or whatever he's supposed to have) he really just has one - Bubba Zanetti - but has a thousand personas. :dunno_white: :dunno_white: :dunno_white: :dunno_white:
BTW... Zanetti is the name of a cartoonist who works for a major daily newspaper down in Aust starting in 1980. Cartoon's called Zanettis View http://www.zanetti.net.au
