Title: Swing arm pivot bolt hole size?
Post by: cboling on December 03, 2009, 08:59:05 PM
Does anyone have their bike apart far enough they can measure the hole where the bolt for the swing arm goes through the frame? Looking at the parts fiche of a 1996 GS500 and 1993 GSXR600 (Which is the swing arm I have) the nut for the bolt on the GS500 is 14mm and teh 600 is 18mm which tells me that I ain't going to be doing a swing arm swap easily.

I am sort of hoping that I might be able to drill the hole to fit the bolt for the 600 swing arm.

Also, while your at it, can you measure the distance between each inside frame section where the pivot bolt hole is? That would save me some grief and time.

I wanna say GS is 15mm. Not 14. But either way the newer ones are hollow and hence much larger OD.
Cool.

Is that a fact?.... I will have to get up to see my mate Bertie the breaker with my Vernier. I have been considering a mod to the suspension and linkage that would allow me to get some grease in there by fitting grease nipples. So the later swingarm pivot bolts are hollow and have a larger O/D?, tell me more. I assume the bearing size hasnt changed so the hardened roller that fits over the bolt and inside the bearing must also have a larger I/D.

So in theory I could drill and tap and fit a grease nipple at the head-end of the bolt then drill a small port through the diameter below each bearing/roller that would allow me to pump some grease in there knowing it will pass thru` the center of the hollow bolt and find its way into the pivot bearings?

I thought about fitting a nipple externely  but the wall of the pivot tube isnt thick enough for drilling and tapping, and welding a nut or something similar on for the nipple to fit into seemed too much effort.

I haven't measured the pivot in a few years. But thought it was 15 mm.

The grease fittings you are referring to are stock on an XS650. The xs people hate the fu(kers. The pivots are known for breaking off at the threads and even some cases of it twisting somewhere in the middle, when loosening. They commonly swap to a solid bolt off a GS550 type suzuki which is known to be 15mm for sure. The XS bolts are garbage. You could find one cheap/free off an xs site.

For a zerk fitting, the best spot for the xs after the 15mm pivot mod and it may be the best spot on the GS too if you must have it, is the underside of the swingarm where the pivot goes through.

Newer sport bikes have Big Fu(king pivots with internal and extrenal threads at the ends that let you lock nut your way to heaven. My SV had a lock nut the size of the GS's steering stem locknut. The ID is near about 24/25mm of the locknut. The pivot there fore is 24/25 mm atleast on the OD and I wanna say 18-20mm ID. People put pipes/rods in them and stand the bike up on jack stands. The ghetto way to keep it vertical.

I dunno what the SV bearings look like, and I do have a swingarm sitting round to check if you so need. but you would prolly be right in assuming they got some massive a$s bearings in them.

BTW a GS swingarm bearing has these needles that are the exact size, length and what not to be a perfect swap in for the float retaining pins off the carbs off a seca 600. A GS bearing cage is plastic, removing the bearings always destroys them.

The GS pivot bolt is 14mm. That is what I made the ID of the spacer bushings when I fitted several RGV s/a.
I do not have the frame width handy, but is narrow compaired to most bikes.
