Title: Replaced stock failed R/R with GSXR1000 one
Post by: Affschnozel on December 09, 2009, 10:32:36 AM
Stock Regulator/Rectifier quit charging the battery completely,I found another from older GS but it lasted

a month until it quit charging too. Bike ran like carp on battery alone BTW.

Quick look on Ebay got me a slightly scraped but working R/R from '08 GSXR1000 (supposed to be more robust and reliable)

for 25$  :D

It had 7 wires coming out (3 stator wires,2 negative,2 positive) so some splicing and soldering was

necessary(splicing together 2 positive wires and the 2 negative).

Connected the output wires directly to battery(with 20A inline fuse on positive wire of course  :icon_rolleyes:)

as suggested by many riders on SVrider forum:http://forum.svrider.com/showthread.php?t=106041 (http://forum.svrider.com/showthread.php?t=106041)

Stator was checked to be good btw.

RESULTS:

At idle w/o lights (euro bike) : ~15.7V ( a bit high so I'll have to keep my eye on that )  Update below

At idle with Hi lights and blinkers : ~14.6V  :thumb:

At 5000rpm with lights and blinker: ~15.6V ( a little high again, regulated values should be 13.5-15.5V)
The body of the GSXR R/R is wider so on GS it's held by one bolt and a zip tie for now.

All in all I'm happy, the bike is back to normal again  :woohoo:

Accumulated some collection:

Here is GS500 VS GSXR1000:

wow, thats cool, i didnt know you could swap electronics between models like that! so do you think any suzuki sport bike reg/rect could swap over to the GS? does the year matter? engine size? do you know if CDI can swap over? i doubt those can because of the two cyclinders on gs and 4 on most other bikes, but im askin you cause you seem to know somethin about electrical components.

There are people making their own CDI's out of chrysler and GM units for old bikes all the time.
The XS650 site has a few ...
You can make a regulator out of something and a rectifier out of a pair of radio shack diodes or some like that.
Yea a delco/GM one may also work ... I may have a bad R/R on my xs.
Ignition box too, the ford or GM units are common.
Cool.

That paints a good picture. If there's one animal I know of that can't run well, it's a large fish.

R/R's are stand alone circuits and on all bikes they're designed to maintain charge at 13-15.5v ,so any other R/R will essentially do,
they differ by amount of wires, all have 3 stator wires and a number of output wires (2-4) some have extra sense wire that monitors
regulated voltage (you can see Kawasaki's R/R with 6 wires on the right)
The sense wire can be spliced with positive one to make fit.

CDI is tailored to specific bike and integrated with it's harness so swapping over is not possible
For instance the older and newer GS CDI's are not interchangeable because they went from using 2 pickups
to just 1 and probably some other changes  :dunno_black:

alright so you say CDIs are not interchangeable but Buddha says, you can use GM/ Ford modules. whos right? and if buddha is right then what car or truck or suv should the cdi come off of for my 97 GS? a 94 cavalier? a 2003 Ford Ranger? 1989 Lumina?

Slow down there ...
I said the xs650 people are fitting various things on from gm and ford.

Actually a GS could take one of those as well ... OK check this out - http://webpages.charter.net/n8nxf/HEI-CX650C.pdf

Also google GM Hei ignition on a motorcycle.
There is plenty of that stuff on the xs650 site as well as virago sites.
Cool.

Small update: My multimeter was low on battery giving inaccurate readings.

New R/R barely fluctuates and keeps voltage stable at ~14.7V and never gets hot  :thumb:
