Title: FS: heavy duty case guards
Post by: ecpreston on December 12, 2009, 12:45:56 PM
All sets sold thanks!

Per this thread:

http://gstwins.com/gsboard/index.php?topic=49904.0

these guards don't exist any more. And as it turns out, the design was less than ideal, the mounting tabs were too thin. So I had a local welder make 10 sets for me. Solid bar, tabs are twice as thick, the welds are much cleaner -- these should be able to take a lot of abuse. Just so your expectations aren't TOO high, these weren't built by a machine, just a very experienced welder. So the mounting holes aren't perfectly centered, but I've test fit them all. Hopefully you guys will like them.

Kit includes the pair as well as the mounting hardware you'll need (not shown). Your existing top bolt can be reused on the bottom, so I'm just supplying a longer top bolt with lock nut and washers. PM or post here if you want a set. $80 shipped in the US. I'll PM my address if you want to send me a check, or my email if you want to do PayPal. Please send $82 if you're going to do PayPal.

Awesome work! I would totally jump on this if I didn't have an F model!

Got a few sets out today.

Consider this the install instructions:

Tools needed:
14mm socket and wrench
loctite (optional)

Remove both front and bottom engine mount bolts. There are spacers on both that sometimes like to fall out, make sure these get put back in!

You're going to re-use the front bolt on the bottom now, it's just long enough to fit with the gaurds in place.

I've included a new front bolt with 4 thin washers and nut. I recommend installing the bottom bolt with a washer on each end. 30ftlbs should be fine.

Install the new front bolt with a washer on each end too. Torque only to 20ftlbs or so, 24 MAX. Make sure the spacers got back in place and use loctite for a little extra insurance. You're done. Go crash.

One member had the front bolt break when installing. Looking up what I could, my assumption that this 60,000psi bolt would be fine since it's the same type MC enterprises supplied, and that worked fine for me was a little hasty. Unfortunately I couldn't even find such a long bolt in any higher strength. So I've revised the install instructions above per this chart, since it shows 24ftlbs = 60,000psi for a 3/8ths bolt.

Hopefully I've interpreted that correctly!  :technical:  Sorry for any hassle.

6 or 7 sets. Certainly I'll pass the savings in shipping on to you for multiple sets, but maybe a little more since it saves me a little time... PM me if you'd like to make an offer.

hi ecpreston,

Do you have any that aren't black? preferably gray/silver because my engine is gray.

I can send you a set at $10 discount that has some finish damage since you want to repaint them anyway.

you know what, I think I might just get it in black/$80 one since I don't think I'll have any time in the coming months to sand it and paint it grey. Send me a PM so we could discuss how to further this purchase.  Thanks

Just got done mounting them.  Look pretty good and feel SOLID.

The dipstick side didn't go on perfect (had to file a corner), but the magneto side fit like a glove.  I think the hang up for the dipstick side is that my engine is mounted just a titch too close to the frame on the bottom.

Thanks ecpreston!

yeah sorry about the dipstick side, it is tight. And on either side, the top mount, which COULD have plenty of room, doesn't because of the weld of the tab to the frame. Hopefully these have been fitting ok, I wanted to leave as much meat on those tabs as possible.

Sending out two sets today via USPS as requested (sorry these took so long)

1 set left and that's it! It's someone else's turn to make some now.  ;)
