Which setting on the petcock will let the carbs empty while running? There is Res, Pri, and On. Also, what type of oil filter do I need?
If it's running, any setting will work, but the tank has to be empty or shut off at the undertank petcock.
You can also leave leave the fuel in the tank topped off (add stabil), shut the first petcock. disconnect the fuel hose from the pri/on/reserve switch to the carbs (to prevent an air lock) and drain the carbs with the float bowl screws. Then reconnect the carb/switch hose. That's how I do it.

I'll try to help by explaining how the three settings operate.
ON: normal operation, fuel flows only when engine runs (vacuum-operated system). OK for winterizing.
RES: reserve, turn it there when your bike start sputtering 'cause it's low on fuel. OK for winterizing.
PRI: priming, use it AFTER winter storage and/or when your carbs are empty for whichever reason. Turn on PRI, wait a few moments (vacuum operation bypassed => carb bowls filling up), then start the bike and put on ON or RES. DO NOT keep on PRI esp. for a long time with the bike sitting still. (i.e. NOT OK for winter storage)

Thanks for the replies, so this bike doesn't have an Off mode for the petcock? That's fine I guess. I just topped it off and added stabil.
No off mode on that petcock. There is off mode for the petcock mounted to the underside of the tank, though.
Just pull the vacuum hose off the petcock with it set to on or reserve and you'll be in off mode while you run out the gas. Easier than lifting the tank to shut off the other valve..
Better yet drain the carbs with drain screws. That way the crap comes out. Do it again in spring.

There is? When i just did my carbs, I had to pull the tank off quickly and drain the tank into a damn bucket. I saw no switch or petcock. Just two lines that go to the carbs. Weird...but the last owner was majorly mechanically retarded and I wouldnt doubt he did something horrible. Its a 1998.
The shut off on the tank is on the valve where the two lines come out. It is round and has a slot in it you could maybe get a screw driver into. I personally just use a pair of pliers as I lift the tank to turn it completely in either direction to shut it off. The slot should be point straight down for on.

Haha, Winter in oklahoma doesn't start until the new year sometimes! It was near 70 a couple days ago in my town. I just wanted a quick answer because I was heading out to my dad's house where I'm storing it.

It was 29/49 today and the bloody savage ran like a top.
The weekend saw ~32-35 and the XS that hasn't run in years and was found lying face down in the mud 3 months ago where I forked over 75 bones for that motor ... ran and ran like a top.
Mu hahahaha ... in good condition they will run in antartica, just get new gas, keep oil in it that will stay liquid in the temp we're talking about, and carbs and battery need to be in good nick.

Well it's a new purchase, not even in my name or insured yet. Don't get me wrong, I had one warm day in the middle of days below 40. But 1 acceptable day in a week is enough for me to store it. Plus I gotta save money for the title transfer and it still needs some work done. I don't think PO did a single damn thing maintenance-wise on the bike in any of the 10k miles he put on it.
