We've all seen plenty of extended swingarms, and most look horrible IMO, but has anyone ever tried to shorten theyre swing arm? for tighter handling or say, easier wheelies?
Back in the day we used to run GSXR 750 swingarms that were ~1 inch shorter on the 1100's.
Ofcourse that was when the good stuff went on the 750 and the 1100 got crappy but swappable parts.

I don't know what the inside of the swingarm looks like, but if you wanted a shorter wheel base I bet you could just cut the wheel slots forward another inch. You might have to get longer adjuster/tensioner bolts(the ones that stick out of the back of the legs). I can picture the bit you would need perfectly in my head, but I don't have the slightest clue what it's called.
How does the GS wheelbase compare to other bikes? You do hit a point where things get too short, I don't know where the GS fits in with that though. That'd definitely help with wheelies, as they're not the GS's favorite trick.
and i just realized it woul help me to fit my 110 link chain with my 45 tooth sprocket!
These things are kind of what I was thinking of, only I'd just try to find a short one that you can fit in a drill press just to cut the hole forward the extra inch.

I've done it, I took a dremel with a cutoff wheel and made the slots longer to the front. I dont know if you will get enough room to use your 110 link chain and 45 tooth rear. but I easily fit a 130-70 with stock sprockets and 108 link chain :thumb:

it will be easier to just dremel the stuff than drillpress + endmill. endmills like to grab and SLING THE SNOT out of things if the setup isn't extremely rigid.
be careful with the drill press and saw, they're the least respected (and sometimes most dangerous to fingers/hands/arms) machines in the shop !

I think ill go with dremel. that way i dont have to even take the wheel off. well shoudnt have to. just the chain. My dremel is fairly new too, so it came with a little 'router' attachment nice idea, thanks :thumb:
If you want to do wheelies, just put on a 14 tooth front sprocket.

my bike is geared 14/47 and it still doesn't wheelie like I'd like it to. The GS can use all the help it can get.
when you shorten the wheelbase your bike will be less stable at higher speeds.
keep that in mind.
also make sure that when you wheelie, the oil actually flows through the internals, you don't want blown engine, do you?

read the comments. I asked the guy about oil problem and sprockets.
He runs STOCK front and +7 rear. He added half liter extra of oil to help with oil starvation.

Why go through all of this just to wheelie a GS500? Just go buy an older Gixxer and be done with it. I am guilty of modding mine for stupid reasons, but I have never made wheelies a priority for the bike. They are too weak. Yes you can do them but look at the trouble most people go through?!?!?!
If you are that hard up for wheelies do a 14/47, leave a cup of gas in the tank and lean the hell back, lol. Wait, I might just try that now. :thumb:

why go through the trouble with a gs? why not, its hardly trouble, and why not just go buy a gixxer? okay, find me a 400 dollar gixxer (which is what i paid for my GS) and i will use a gixxer, "you dont want a blown engine do you?" no why would I?, im not gonna blow an engine from doing a 30 second wheelie, especially since I dont even use oil cause i run on skim milk. Theres plenty of people out there whove wheelied a GS without any lubricant system mods and havent blown an engine. and you must skipped what the other 2 reasons were, seeing as how i also said it makes the steering tighter (or are you gonna argue that too?) and that it would allow me to use 110 links with a 16/45 sprocket set up. :flipoff: :nono: :tongue2:

BTW a GS 500 looks awful wiht an extended swingarm, like you want to own a sport bike that is stretched and slammed and this was all you could afford.
All other sport bikes ... look far worse ... why dont you just hang out a sign that says, I cannot ride, and I dont have any taste or common sense.
Just to prove that point, make that sign in huge color changing - green to pink is best, glitter paint and blast michael bolton songs from the sound system you have ... you obviously have fitted your bike wiht a full on 800 watts of power on the system ... cant have a stretched and slammed bike without that ...

Damn! I'm jealous of everyone in Detroit right now. That is EXACTLY what I want for a long term project. I wouldn't mind one a little more put together, but for $500 I wouldn't be complaining!
