I bought a 2004 GS500F with 13,000 miles. It needs the hardware to put the fairings back on and new rear brake pads. I talked the guy into taking $1000 for it. Do you think I got a good deal?

So you have a naked bike with some fairings which may or may not be put back on at your discretion, only needs new brake pads... for an M note?
Sounds good to me.
Now be sure to do the following...
#1. Pics of the bikes or it never happened.
#2. Change the oil and oil filter so you Know what is in it.
#3. I'd personally change the plugs too, but that's your choice.

Not bad at all. I just shelled out $2,300 for my '06 with 14k miles, all straight and clean but needs a new rear tire.
I don't know what they go for elsewhere, but around here you can't touch even an older "E" for under two grand. Cheapest "F" I've seen (besides mine) was an '05 for $2,800.
It's funny really, I've seen several GSXR's and SV's for less than the GS's around here... people are nuts.
The most ridiculous are ninja 250s. People are always trying to sell them for $2500 and all the way up to msrp. That's cool if you only bought it to learn on, were super gentle on it, only your wife rode it, whatever the story is. As soon as you take that bike off the showroom it's not worth that much. You can easily find nice 600s for what people want for a 250. GS500s seem to have high prices on them too, unless they're really old or are in rough shape. I even paid $1500 for a 12 year old gs with an ugly yellow paint job that got spray painted over, and a carb problem that made it completely bog out from 5-6k rpm. That was an easy fix once I pulled the carbs apart to clean them, but we rode the bike for a year like and a half before it got parked for 4, only after that did I even fix them.
There was just a 2008 zzr600 on craigslist here for $1200! They're basically the 98-02 ninja that's just considered "slow" now. Look to be in great shape! needs a tire and the plastics are cracked, but you already know how I feel about plastics! just about anything you can wonder/ask about can be found in the wiki, or by the search button up there around the top of your page... someone has tried, failed, or succeeded in whatever you're trying to do to your new gs. remember, it's been around for 20 years now ;)
