I put an old R1 tail on mine. You don't really need any motorcycle knowledge to do it. It's all just getting a new tail, setting it on the subframe, seeing why it doesn't fit, cutting that part off of the subframe, then you find some extra metal and make some new mounting brackets. You'll either have to cut up your seat, or but an R6 seat. I'll some pictures for you at a later point in time so you can see what I did to mine. I just cut a couple inches off the back of the subframe, bolted an r6 tail light to it, and just made 2 other little brackets to bolt it to the subframe. The last picture I posted was in the picture game thread at the bottom of this page.... http://gstwins.com/gsboard/index.php?topic=45412.1160 although I'm still working on cleaning it up over winter, but I'll find you some better pictures later.

not to pick on you, but seeing that you had troubles understanding if you need to change rotors all together with brake pads or not, you may find modifying you sub-frame a little overwhelming at the moment...

stick to simpler mods at first, get a hang of your bike's handling, have fun and then modify hard stuff.

Also you will probably need a welding machine to fit a R6 tail on GS. (you need to 'attach' the brackets somehow to the GS sub-frame, and I doubt that JB weld is strong enough  ;) )

good luck

How's your general mechanic ability? Like I said before, it is a bit of work to get it on, and you have to get creative at points, but you don't really need to know anything about motorcycles to fit the tail, so if you're ok at building things with your hands, you should be fine. You do need a couple extra brackets, but I can show you how I made mine. I just bolted them to the subframe using some already existing holes, and just bolt the tail right to those, pretty simple.

They fit, but they're not perfect. The lines of the tail match up pretty well but not exactly. Most of the ones I've seen that were really done well had the bottom rail of the subframe cut, lifted about an inch where it meets the main bar of the frame, and rewelded. You can do it without rewelding it but the subframe will stick down below the tail about an inch in the front, mine does.

My tail was from a 99 I believe, and it's just a solo race tail. I've seen people do normal tails and actually put in the work to attach the passenger seat, but the solo tail is much easier if you don't ride passengers. I'm not sure which newer ones will fit.

Over all it's a good winter project though.

Naaa ... you just need to go to the local dealer and buy the Yamaha R6 tail stickers. Then find a suitable spot to slap them on.

BTW all the R6/RI GSXR/CBR tails all show the side view.
Not 1 shows it from straight above.

Can you say Queen Latifah ass on Lindsay Lohan.

Yup.
Cool.

From above it pretty much looks like its fatter than the tank, which aesthetically looks weird, cos sport bikes are usually narrower in the seat than the tank.

Cool.

don't get me excited!

It depends what tank you have on the bike. Most people who have done this swap did it with the old style tank, and yes, the tail looks super wide when you do that(althought no one can tell when you're actually on the bike). Since I've switched to the new style tank which is a lot wider, the tail fits it very well. My tail looks even wider than this one. I have pictures of it with both tanks so I'll try to post them both so you can compare.

Jim that tail swap looks really good. Looks like he moved the bottom rails of the subframe up so it fits the tail better. Someday when I can weld I'll probably move mine up a bit, which should help out, plus I may put in the extra effort to make the mounts so I can fit a normal road tail with a removable seat cowl so I actuallly have some storage. I could fit a small dog under my tail with how much space is under there now, but the problem is that I have to way to get under there!

hey on that first pic, what rear shock is that? looks like the bike is really high. does it have aftermarket dog bones? do longer bones or shorter bones raise the bike?

looks like it's a number of things, first that's not even a GS shock, doesn't look like a GS swingarm, plus the bottom rail of the subframe has been cut and welded higher.

That's either a GSXR 600/750/1000 tail... I don't know the difference between the three tails.

That is also stock paint on that tail.

Here's some pictures of the tail compared to the old tank. Unfortunately I couldn't find any from directly behind, but that's because the tail was so wide I didn't figure it was a good angle.

and here's an above picture, just for Buddha...

Here's the tail with the new tank, I think it's very well proportioned.

This last one shows you how the bottom of the subframe sticks out below the bottom of the tail. The front of the tail happens to match up with the bolts to hold the tank to the subframe, so that works out well. I need to find a new seat anyway, so if I can find one that drops about an inch in the front, I can drop the front of the tail, make some new mounts for it, and it would just line up with the subframe as it is. The only other thing I have to deal with is the face that the tail is much wider than the subframe, so I need to find something to fill the gap between the subframe and the tail on the sides so you can't see up inside of it

I'll work on getting some detailed pictures later so you can see how it actually mounts up.

Do you have any pics from the side of the old tank and the new tank?

The new tank does look much better though from those angles you took but it's hard to tell also from the different color.

I have to admiit that the R6 tail looks quite funny with old style tank, but with the new one it looks great!
I think it will look even better with the F style fairings.
I also like the GSXR tail on the F version.

I also like the GSXR tail on the F version.

I'd like to find an 04-05 gsxr tail to try sometime, but I'd probably wait until I was ready to mess with the subframe because it would only look right if it was at the right angle. Here's a picture from the side with the old tank....

and one with the new tank

I think from the side it actually looks better with the old tank, mostly because of the steeper angle on the back of the tank and the sharper curve in the upper back corner, but that's only one of multiple angles, and the other still doesn't look that bad.

Not even close to Jennifer Hewitt. Its like Lindsay Lohan with queen latifah sized ass plastered on.
BTW I am a lati-fan so its not cos I dont like latifah ass. Just that it needs to stay with The queen.
Anyway It looks awful on the old tank, and less awful on the new, and fairing I am pretty indifferent both ways.

I've had thoughts of trying to cut it down the middle and fiberglass it back together a bit skinnier, but because of the shape I don't think it would work. The whole tail isn't wide, just the middle of it, so if I did that the tail would just come to a point in the back, and I'd have to figure out something new for the tail light, plus the seat would be too wide too. I think once it's painted to match it will be a lot better.
