Title: Stock Exhaust question
Post by: rger8 on December 23, 2009, 07:52:25 PM
Is the stock exhaust one continues piece all the way up to the engine?  I don't see any clamps etc... Looks like the exhuast cannister is welded on, true?

Thanks!

or replace the whole thing, the V&H and Jardine full systems are less expensive and easier to install than most slip ons.

Ok, Kinda wierd it's all one piece. It's in good shape but I can see some of the back paint coming off already. I may just pull it and repaint with 1200 degree Hi temp paint.

Thanks to all for the answer to my question.

search for Vance and Hines or Jardine full systems. on any site the V&H is $280-300, I got mine for $280 from bikebandit.com. The jardine can be had for approximately $320 from starcycle.com. Most slipons are atleast $250 for a cheap one. yoshimura slipons are $350 and require cutting. all slip ons require cutting on the gs. the full systems are very easy to install, the stock system is only held on with 5 bolts, took me 1 hour or so to remove my stock system and install the V&H. The jardine is the same install as the V&H.

FYI slip ons add little-to-no power (on the gs), Full systems add very noticeable power. both require rejets.

Do you not believe me? The stock exhaust is held on with 5 bolts. its a very easy install. I have to remove the exhaust, headers and all, to change my oil (V&H headers go directly in front of oil filter housing, which is WEAK). I usually take 45-55 min to do an oil change, including removing and installing the exhaust. Now I have gotten faster due to experience but the first time took approximately 1 hour, not including the oil change. Why do you think it would take a long time to unbolt 5 bolts? they are easy to get to, i dont even have to remove my fairing.

And if you dont believe me on price, check this out:

The full systems listed above were slightly less expensive when I bought mine about 1 year ago, but they are still cheaper than most good slip ons.

No im laughing cause you full systems are less expensive then said all these prices - slip on -250- and all the other prices you said were above 250 and the other part im laughin is not cause i think it would take longer to remove 5 bolts, its cause it take me like 15 minuetes to remove the exhaust and change oil, and an extra 5 min. when i sometimes remove the oil pan to clean it which i dont do every time but when i do no where near 1 hour) i thought you were joking about the 1 hour part, my bad man

for sure you can get a slip on for like 250 or less but most name brands (Yoshimura, twobros, akropovic, ect.) are vastly more expensive and all slip ons require cutting (on the gs anyway).

as for the exhaust removal, yeah I thought you were sayin I was sooo fast, but you were in-fact sayin I was sooo slow! Ha!  :D
I hope I can get it down like you (seriously) I freakin hate havin to remove the thing just to change the oil, with out removing the exhaust it would only take like 15min to change oil. I think it takes me a grip to remove the exhaust because I dont remove the fairing
We cool

Not sure about the if it will work on the V & H but on the Yoshimura full exhaust you can unbolt the exhaust from the frame mount near the can and push down lightly.  The exhaust pipes flex just enough to get the oil filter out.

Why does that really matter? I've probably removed and switched around headers 5-10 times on my GS since I've had 3 different exhausts on there and my current setup requires removal for a lot of maintenance. I've only replaced the exhaust gaskets once and it didn't make a difference as far as I can tell. I think they are totally reusable.

I never changed the gaskets in the 4 times ive removed my exhaust, although I did buy new ones with the V&H system. I couldnt figure out how to get the stock ones out without damaging them, they looked fine any way and they dont leak sooo...  :dunno_black: but I do have a set for if they do ever leak

I've changed the oil with my V&H a couple times and I never remove the exhaust. I don't remember having any trouble getting the filter out. Oil does run out on that one part of my exhaust, but that doesn't bother me much. You could cover that part of the pipe with aluminum foil or something while you're changing the oil if it bothers you too much.

I have replaced gaskets when I've taken it off, so I usually try my best to not take it off so I don't have to replace them. Knowing that other people here haven't changed theirs, I'll probably leave mine be next time.

I cant physically get the old filter out or the new one in with out removing the headers, I tried! where are you getting the filter through? what year is your gs?

+1  I've repainted mine twice with BBQ paint and it looks mint. Doesn't last as long as powder coating though...
