Title: Starter Motor? Solenoid? Need Some help troubleshooting....
Post by: tulane1024 on October 15, 2003, 07:55:11 AM
Bike died the other day, i thought i left the parking lights on so i pushstart it and it runs fine. I get to work, battery is charged because headlights come on when i put key in but i hit the start button and hear this fast clicking, from under the seat(right side). The lights dim and the battery runs out. It wasnt the sound of the engine not turning over, i couldnt hear the starter moving at all. Whats wrong with my bike?

That fast clicking is the starter relay (solenoid) opening and closing because there is enough battery voltage to open the relay but not enough to keep it open and power everything else. Turning the key on and having a headlight is only an indication that the battery is not TOTALLY dead. The lights will turn on with about 7-8 volts in the battery (IIRC) but it takes at LEAST 10.5 to get the starting and ignition systems to work.

You should be able to charge the battery (with a charger, not the bike) and be good to go.
