Title: GS500 + Sidecar???? Anyone?
Post by: treehouse99 on January 01, 2010, 08:23:54 PM
I may try to mount a lightweight Velorex sidecar on my GS500. Does anyone here have any experience w/ this or know of any GS/sidecar rigs?
Please consider that I'm an older rider and have experience w/ a Jawa 350/Velorex sidecar rig. Pics, anyone?

The pic is gone now, but there was a nice GS500 rig with an Earles fork on here a while back.

Should be no big problem if you know how to set it up and can do the mounts - the current fad for "needing" a bike with a car-sized engine to run a sidehack is disproved by years of doing it with smaller bikes, and your own experience with the 350 Jawa

Here's a thread that has a picture of a rig that still works (in the UK position) but with regular forks, not the leading link Earles.

Hi Treehouse, the UK GS outfit is mine will do some detailed photo`s for you (can`t at the mo` it`s dark outside) i owned a jawa/velorex for a short time but the engine and electrics let me down constantly, velorex is a nice universal chair though. As far as i know mine is the only GS5 with a sidecar,i`ve searched online and can`t find one. There`s a lack of tyre choice over here for the bike (can`t get flat tread tyres in 17`s)although early gsxr750/1100 had an 18 on the rear. The flat tread tyre`s also require tubes,i prefer tubeless.I`ve stuck with a pair of normal arrowmax`s.Having square tubing makes it hard to buy fittings but easy to attatch plates,(i didn`t mind welding 3 permant plates to my frame)are you taking the chair off the jawa and adapting to fit suzi? I fitted a rear shock off a zx1100,the origional wasn`t strong enough with a passenger on the back it effected the lean out too much.there`s a recent thread on here of a regulater upgrade using a gsxr1000 unit, might prove worthwhile as you will be using more lighting,GS reg/rectifiers are prob` not the best,i`ve just had to replace mine i fitted one from a yam/xvs650.I fitted my chair six months ago went to south Wales with the mrs and child tent and kit,it done about 500mile no prob`.fuel consumption is hardly effected.excuse the ramblings i had a party last night and feel a little hungover thanks to JD.
Seasons greetings,Its a white xmas in the UK,Snowbound for a week needed a blast.

Thanks everyone for your help and advice. I was outbid on the Ebay auction, but will continue to look for a suitable sidecar. My usual ride is one of my mopeds from a collection, so a 500 is actually quite large for me!

Thanks for the links and the help, guys. The leading-link setup is supposed to make the steering easier.
