My rear break is howling when I apply primarily at low speed. The bike has 700 miles on it so I don't think it's worn out. When I bought it from the guy I saw a bunch of oil or greasy stuff all over the rear wheel. Could the brake pads have gotten this crap on them and cause it to squeal. I wiped down the rotor with alcohol but didn't seem to work. Any suggestions or do I need new pads?

from what I have read and my own experience, most gs500's do that relentlessly. the only way I got mine to stop squeaking was a hard stop using both brakes from 120mph, the squeaking did come back after a week or so though. so far no permanent fixes, lubricating the pad sliding surfaces (NOT the face that contacts the rotor but the points where the pads slide in the caliper!) and the back of the pad where they touch the pistons helps to temporarily dull the sound.

Good chance the Gunk you saw was flingage from chain lubricating. But without pics it's hard to say.
Suggestions for getting rid of squeek (no guarantees)...
#1: While going down hill, hit rear brake Hard.
#2: Apply lithium grease or white grease to Back of brake pad. This is the side of the pad which contacts the piston. Apply to the metal shim the piston contacts. Do this when you change pads... or remove pads and do it then put them back.
#3: Realign the rear wheel. Apparently there are marks to go by. But I have not seen them on my bike. :dunno_white:
#4: Ignore it.

except gs500s top out at like 100-110
mine stopped swueaking when i adjusted the chain tension nuts, theres one on the right and one on the left at the very back of the swingarm. try it
My rear brake squeeks like hell,but it has no anti squeel plates (like a metal shim fits on the back of the pad)has yours?
Mine squeal quite a bit. New pads and all...Heck my subarus new pads squeak like hell. I think some cars and bikes just do it and some dont. Not a performance issue in my opinion.
i got mine to stop squeaking and hasnt done it since i fixed it. After bending my brake torque to fit my kat rear wheel and 160 rear tire the squeak is gone never to return. So with that said i beleave the squeak is from either bad tire alignment or misalignment from the brake arm to the caliper making the brake noise.
It's thick, it's black and super gooey, one thin application to the back of the pads and the squeaking is gone for years, yes it's good enough to put an end to "Squeaking Rear Brake" threads.

I cured my singing GS500F rear brake with a product by CRC called "Disc Brake Quiet" (CRC product #05016).

Mine came in a 4oz spouted squeeze bottle and I have done three cycles with it and the bottle is still nearly full. This cream colored red stuff appears to be an ultra high temp acryllic polymere RTV. You put a dab on the rear of the pads and you spread it out to get a paper thin icing coat. Then you let them partially/mostly cure for 10 minutes and reassemble. She no squeak no more. It also helps to use a brake caliper lube on the pivots and metal to metal contact areas. It also helps to keep your rotors clean and free of cleaner/polish over spray that will glaze.

Most people don't understand that brake squealing is caused from the back of the brake pad making contact with the piston, not the friction material making contact with the rotor :cheers:

Well, I didn't know this was a problem with the GS 500. That said, it looks like there may be a potential fix with the Honda & CRC product. I will give one or both a try and see how it goes. The howling makes me go crazzzzy!! :mad: I'll try adjusting the wheel / chain alignment as well.

but then again I never use it,.. have 22k km's on it never changed the rearpads.

Is that product applied directly to the disc? If so, that is probably similar to a product we used at the Toyota dealership. I used it on Kay's GS and it stopped the rear brake squeak for a whole season.

Take a look at my sig, listed is my modifications. when it was stock it would go 113-114mph. after the mods it will now redline in 6th (11000rpm) at ~130. I have done it 5 or 6 times on different roads so it for sure do it. Honestly it would prolly go faster but I dont like going above 11000 rpm because of valve float.
i hit 110 or 111 on mine , might have had a slight tailwind. tried again and couldnt hardly get over 100 =/ was kind of dissapointing and made me want to get something a bit bigger like a sv650 sv1000 zx6r or zx12r lol.

I feel ya, I would love a 2008 sv1000, my dream bike. but i cant find them within 500 miles of me. plus it would be more than I really need or want. I have driven a few 100whp 600cc repliracers and 2 125whp moderately modded kawi 636s and yes there balls fast, literally scare me away from the power fast. and there nothin compared to a healthy liter bike. a lightly modded sv1000 makes around 125whp.
an sv650 on the other hand will be mine some day, 2005+ only though. again hard to find 2005+ sv650s or sf in reasonable range. a lightly modded sv650sf will put down 75whp, not too much power and similar feel as gs (which i love), but will put even the most highly modded gs500 to shame. stock gs500 is 39whp, my moderately modded gs = 44whp.
