Hi Goldfish, never ridden a restricted bike but up to about 650s they don't get too bad a press. If you check out the UK site "Biker's Vine" there is a GS500 user forum in that. It is not one of the most populer forums but from memory I think they have covered the power restriction issue fairly well. Also worth a look is www.gs500e.co.uk a good site not unlike this one, being UK based the restriction issue is bound to have come up.

You got that 25Kw/34hp rule in the UK? i thought only Germany Belgium and Holland had that. Anyway I have to endure this rule as well cause I got my license when 19 year old instead of 21 year old when you may drive with any power you like. it's not that bad really, it pulls a little less in the top range (from 6.5-7 thousand rpm I guess)  than the stock (yep I rode mine in stock :) , but dont tell anyone :nono:  ;)  ) as for the topspeed I rode mine 89er up to 170 km/h on the bike speedometer but my bycicle speedo told me I was going 159 real km/h, I don't know if it can go any faster than that, I didn't really care bout that because I thought that it was fast enough for me already. As long as there are corners the GS can smoke'm all  :thumb:

I guess you know but you can get rid of the restriction by taking direct access or accelerated access but it can be a bit expensive, however at this time of year the trainers are not exactly run off their feet so you can often cut a good deal ( I did mine in December)

Hello,

Had a GS500 restricted, its same performance upto about 8000RPMS. When restricted tends not to redline so easily.

Max speed 90 MPH. Acceleration not much different. VERY easy to remove kit but make sure you have the original main jet and slider. If you dont have the sliders fill the little holes in them with bodge and sand down.

Andy.

Thanks for replying everyone.  Yeah we have to have it in the UK (i agree with restriciton in principle, for example, the learner 15bhp limit, is sensible, but 33bhp for two years? Another example of the nanny state in which i live - people's lives are in their own hands, and they choose to do with them what they will)  And i knoew about direct acces but I'm actually only 18! I don't think ill de restrict it the police are always out and about (doubt theyd bother with a dyno) but if they didnt catch me, my dad would kill me...  PS The Gs could really do with a gear indicator, ive kinda got used to having one.

thanks

Can the GS500 be used for Direct Access?  I thought that the GS was a little small for that qualification (needs 47hp?).

In Holland it's powerful enough to do an unrestricted exam on. (34 kW)

There are several restriction kits for the GS500. Mine was restricting the movement of the slide. When I removed it, I did feel a change at lower rpm's, it pulled much harder. The top-end changed quite a bit. With the 33bhp kit, you could just reach 11000 rpm and from 9000 there wasn't much power left. Without the kit, it pulls strong to 10K rpm and pretty quick to 11K rpm.

But you better install the kit. The police probably won't find out that your bike is unrestricted during a regular check, but if you are involved in an accident there's a chance the insurance company will start an investigation. If they discover that the bike is unrestricted, they probably won't pay out.
