Title: So I had my first "crash" - Now what do I need to fix it? *PICS*
Post by: jwjulian on January 09, 2010, 05:25:05 PM
Had some snow/ice in Atlanta so I haven't ridden for the past two days. The main roads were fine so I took the bike out to go pick some stuff up from CycleGear.

On the way back I pulled over into a parking lot to check something out and had to drive over a big patch of snow/ice (20ft long x entire width of lane). I pulled through it just fine, but on the way back my rear slid out. I wasn't in gear and was just coasting at about 5mph - very slow.

Anyway, I'm fine (might have bruised up my knee, but very minor) but the bike got busted up in one spot.

Is the bike ok to drive like this and what part(s) do I need to fix it?

Thanks for the input guys and I will be sure to steer clear of ALL snow/ice from now on....  ;)

that part is like 33 bucks new oem from bikebandit. I think it houses the stator, some electrical wires, and the nut to turn the crankshaft so it should be ok to just cover the hole with tape and ride(someone please correct me if I'm wrong) and glad you're all right

Should probably pull the cover off to make sure there is no damage underneath.

+1 but there shouldnt be. but yea thats the stator cover. you can buy a replacement anywhere online or at your dealer. not an expensive fix.

Buddha sells that part ... mondo thick billet $40 shipped, comes with bolts.

BTW its not the stator cover, tah tis the left side, this cover is on the ignition trigger coils and oil pressure fitting and igntion advancer. I know one dude that crached and bent his advancer into a banana and boogered up the threads end of the crank.

That cover is dry, so oil leak aint really an issue, but you crash on tha tside with a borken cover you ruin the stuff inside ... it could be the end of the useability of that motor. Or atleast very very $$$.

Cool.

Let me look around in the for sale section to see if I can find one. If not, let me know your paypal (and if you'll cut me a deal since I sent you that speedo cable a long time ago...lol)

Yea I remember ... though its a wee bit foggy ... OK its late, how's 30 shipped.

That cover gets destroyed faster than the new guy on a CSI episode ... so its prolly futile ... This one I make is also built for the freaking bomb  ... so you could drop Jessica Biel on it and it will survive.

Cool.

Buddha, you make those? I might have to grab one of those. Previous owner dumped it, mines not broken just all scatched up.

With me bare hands ... I catch it with one hand and machine it by turning it against the other. Works perfect.

And when you order em, I just throw them ... they just land right at your door. Sometimes dogs etc come and think its a frisbee and try to catch it ... usually the dog gets punted into the neighboring state ...
Cool.

I guess so haha. But as long as I keep my core warm with a good jacket I can brave some pretty low temps. My legs never get that cold so I usually don't even wear overpants. Lately my hands have been getting very cold, but I have some TM silk glove liners and some winter gloves on the way so that should help. If that doesn't work then the next thing will be handguards!

Put 160 miles on my GS in the last two days. 20ish yesterday, 30ish today.
All it takes is gear.

Yeah. I got my pants/gloves today so riding wasn't so bad. The area between my jacket and helmet on my neck gets really cold at highway speeds, so I just cut the bottom of a skull cap off (the fat part) and slip it over my neck. Works great. Oh, and I got my handguards in too.
Really, living in GA, I don't see it as a huge deal buying cold weather gear, because it will be dusty 9-11 months out of the year.
I prefer handguards because I had them on my
enduro and they were awesome, even in the summertime. You could see all the stuff that would have hit your hands that is splattered on the front of the guards.
Tis my two cents

You just knocked my dogs teeth out, thanks.
But for real do you machine those? Or did you design and get them outsourced? Just curious. Ill probably be buying one shortly. Cant find one on eBay, and like the looks of yours.

Got the part the other day Buddha. If anyone needs something like it, I recommend it highly. It's around the same price as an OEM part, but buddhas part is nice, thick and heavy. And it looks a he'll of a lot better! A++!

(just give it a good wipe before you put it on, Buddha has greasy hands.... lol)

I dont machine them myself, simply cos ... well I dont have a lathe.
I have had 1 guy do these from the first iteration. I have held on one to one that first set too ... so from 2003 he's been my guy for these.
Fork braces too, same guy.

So not true outsourcing to china types. I have a local machinist that did this.
BTW the steering stem guy - totally different guy. 2008 guy was great, but he retired and the machine broke or whatever and 09 set has been a mess. I am there fore killing that idea. Cant lose 3 stems out of 8  :cookoo: ...

The rest all I made, of course I dont weld either, the welding shop however does it with me screaming instructions each step and with the bike there for fitment etc ...

JwJulian - thanks. I like the fact that these are boxy looking. No mistaking it for some girly stock BS.

Cool.
