Title: What did you wake up to???
Post by: BaltimoreGS on February 06, 2010, 12:15:09 PM
I haven't seen this much snow in Baltimore in a while.  After having to look at the Snowflake of Death graphic in the corner of the local TV station's prime time shows for the last few days I'm glad the storm wasn't all hype this time.  Now that I'm done shoveling I can watch wall to wall coverage of each snowflake for the next 2 days.  And just in case you don't buy into all that fancy Doppler radar stuff the meteorologist at the studio has been showing off they have Dik Loser reporting live from some random street corner to prove the snow is real.

The view when I awoke

Hopefully my neighbors get off their asses and shovel their part of the alley before Monday

After a few hours of shoveling

Under that pile of snow is an old Camaro that wont be seeing the light of day for a while

Whoa!  The last time I woke up to that much snow was near Chattanooga, 1991 or 1992.

Today I woke up to a partly cloudy, 50°F day.

So I take it you're going to be going out for a ride? hahha just kidding. I haven't ever seen snow like that..except for once in '93 I believe it was when it snowed like crazy. I think we got like 3 inches. We called it a blizzard. hahahah..this is in middle GA.

The only part of any of the cars in our driveway we could see was the mirrors. The pine trees were so weighted down with snow that they were laying ON the snow in the driveway.

On the bright side, the main roads look okay! :)

Hi everyone,
Here in Lancaster, PA, we got 18 inches of snow and up to 24 inches in parts of Lancaster County. Nearby, Philly was hit with 28 inches.
It's gorgeous, but I look at my lovely GS500 in my garage and think how much I miss riding. :)
Spring is not far away. That's what keeps me going. :)
Fe careful out there.
Yours,
Trwhouse

All of these pictures were taken before the storm ended.  The roads still pretty much look like that.

I'm wondering how much snow they got in Bedford, PA.  The picture below was taken a few weeks ago.  I stuck some 2x4's up to give the porch extra support in case of a heavy snow.  The 1/2 a Camaro on the side of the house is actually a zoning requirement in Appalachia

I'll throw my hat into the game!

Driving out to get a new belt for my snow blower early this morning (sun) was pretty hairy.  95 was cleared down to the blacktop in one lane and nothing else was; and I drive a nice light honda...

Digging my car out with a shovel so I could actually get out to get the belt was pretty miserable too...

Thanks Michael, my grandfather built that house in the 1940's.  It sits near a reservoir that is the water supply for Cumberland, MD.  Originally it was built as a fishing cabin but it has had a few additions/renovations since then to make it more livable.  The view behind the camera is all mountains.  I would live there full time if there were decent paying jobs in that area.  At the moment I use it as a weekend retreat/vacation spot.

-Jessie

Behind the camera is just mountains

The reservoir(s), Koon Lake & Lake Gordon.  There are 2 dams which create 2 lakes in a row.  This is the upper one (Koon) that the house sits on.

My favorite view is when that porch is full of bikes

I came to Seattle from Toledo, Ohio to escape the snow and cold! This has been a fantastic Seattle winter compared to last year. We're actually getting a kind of early spring in that we have early budding on the trees and I've seen some cherry trees blooming!

While I know we are far from perfect I think race relations are better among younger generations.  I know I'd make a terrible racist cause I usually can't tell what ethnicity people are.  When I met Kay I thought she was Hawaiian or Mexican (some sort of brown).  Then she told me she was born in India so I assumed she was Indian.  Turns out she is of Philipino decent.  Asian, the correct answer is Asian.  But now that I know that I annoy her with all kinds of bad Asian driving jokes so I guess I am a racist after all   :D

I'm a big ole' racist...  I just clump everyone into "those people" groups, lol.  Really, its not fair to judge our country as a whole based on a hick village in the sweaty ass crack of America with a pop. of like 25?  Race relations would get a whole lot better if people stopped screaming for equality while waving a sign saying "We're different"  Just my opinion...

You're not a racist just because you can't tell a Mexican from an African- that makes you ridiculous.  The asian jokes just make you extremely annoying- only because you do it every time we drive-oh, especially annoying since YOUR driving is  :cookoo: .

I think when it comes down to it, everybody is at least a little bit racist, whether they know it or not- but just keep in mind, while it's not fair to judge 'based on one sweaty ass crack'(hahhahha) there's a huge population that don't scream and wave signs at all.  Actually, Jessie waves the sign for me with all his stupid jokes.
You Know, out of all the countries I've lived in, the US is the best in terms of race relations that I've experienced- and most of those experiences were funny, rather than insulting.

Hah! Did you get it before the dec 19 storm? If so, you win.

This little guy was one of my best craigslist finds.  I got it a few summers ago for $50 from an old guy that was retiring to Florida.  It's small but usually is perfect for the snow fall we get around here.  On these latest storms I had to go out every time it got to 6-8 inches deep.  A bunch of the neighbors saw me out there and said they'd pay me to keep the whole alley passable.  Some of them even payed extra to do their driveways.  Good times   :thumb:

The hero of the day: an old ass 2 stroke Cub Cadet snow blower

We won't be using these steps for a while

Times like this make it worth spending the extra money year round for 4 wheel drive.  There's an old Camaro under the snow pile on the right.  I hope the weatherstrip is still good...

The roadway from the alley to the main road.  There are other people in the neighborhood that use the road so I just did a half assed job on it.  Anyone that doesn't like it is welcome to grab a shovel

One of the neighbors that paid extra to get her driveway done.  Notice it looks better than my house   ;)

This neighbor never contributes money or man power to the clean up effort so I make sure to blow lots of snow onto him.  Good luck opening those gates

The melting snow is making some nice icicles

Good news is that I hear we're getting a federal bailout to pay for some of the plowing.  So all you suckers in SoCal and FL still don't get to get out of paying for snow removal!

Yeah, 4 inches is a oh my goodnessload in middle GA.  I'm about 100 miles east of you...  You'd think people would know that you can buy milk and bread tomorrow, or the next day.  It's not like you even have to shovel the driveway!

Behind the camera is just mountains

The reservoir(s), Koon Lake & Lake Gordon.  There are 2 dams which create 2 lakes in a row.  This is the upper one (Koon) that the house sits on.

My favorite view is when that porch is full of bikes

Ah... if only there was a way to make $$$ remotely. So your $$$ making efforts did Not depend on Where you lived.

That is just Bee-U-Ta-Ful. The kinda place I'd got to Every weekend. Even if I did nothing while there, just being there would recharge the battery of the soul.

Thank you for sharing this.

Michael

So the DC metro area is finally having a few days without any more snow, and today the sun came out! I took the opportunity to dig out my GS and get her running. I thought I'd put up some pics I took on Wednesday, when we were hit with the 2nd part of SNOWPOCALYPSE 2010.

Here's my bike after I cleared the snow off of it on Tuesday.

A picture of the cool tank-tread Bobcat they were using to clear the parking lot of the shopping center near my house.

The Chinese food place near my house was open through the worst of it! Also, my gf in winter garb w/ shovel.

Finally, my Subaru after digging it out on Wednesday night. A crazy winter this one! Retribution for getting made fun of for having AWD in DC!

Man, I need to check this site more often...

Here's my place last weekend during the big one:

Ended up building a quinzhee (like an igloo) since I was snowed in alone

Took the DR out to the park and into DC:

Even took some video on that DC ride:  http://vimeo.com/9418403 (http://vimeo.com/9418403)
