what did the old vance and hines advancer do?
bump same question
no idea but there unavailable now anyway. I do know it was a simple hardware change though so nothing fancy. advancing your timing is easy:
1. remove timing cover
2. remove pickup coil
3. remove rotor
4. remove plate
5. grind holes in the plate so the plate can be rotated 5* (4mm aprox.) counter-clockwise
6. install every thing back
I actually dyno tuned mine last summer with varying amounts of timing. and the bottom line was, on regular gas with V&H exhaust, lunchbox, and carbs already dynotuned, +5* is safe and gives around 2whp at peak(9800ish rpms)and over 3whp above 10000rpm. plus more power everywhere else and smoother idle/low-rpm-riding and a small MPG increase.
I settled on +6* with colder plugs and 13:1afr, but im sure with alittle more fuel I could add another degree or two for another 1/2whp.
and finally with stock internals, the gs just didnt like mid-grade or premium gas. it rode fine and felt just as fast but it made less power on the dyno. It made the most power on regular gas with +6* timing, even mid-grade with +8 degrees made less.
Vance and Hines is 5 degrees.
Nice job on the tuning and dyno info. :thumb:
I have one on my bike, and to be honest I still don't even understand what the thing does... :dunno_white:
You should allow multiple selections as there are more than one options I have experienced.
I noticed better low-end, better lugging in lower rpm's, better acceleration, less drivetrain backlash, etc.
I am glad I did it.

It advances the ignition timing by 5* over stock. this yeilds more power, more torque, less bogging, less vibration, and potentially better MPG. the improvement becomes more noticeable when more mods are done.
