Title: My crazy VW
Post by: dauphinc on February 16, 2010, 10:11:07 PM
I have a Volkswagen, 2008 golf (rabbit). So i'm at home taking a shower when the panic goes off..weird because i didn't lock it. Turns out I washed the keys.
The replacement keys are only 300 bucks a set because it has VW stamped on it and it's laser cut. I let it dry out and it's fine though.

I'm confused...you bathe with your keys? Do they help clean spots that you just can't get?

Usually they're $$$ because of the little rfid chip that turns off the engine immobilizer.  I dont' think that piece has anything that'd be water damaged, so I'd imagine you'd be ok bathing with it.  The buttons might not work after that though.

Try drying the inside too. But don't apply direct heat to the circuitry.
God damn crazy German engineering  :technical: haha.
Good luck!

HAHA! I let them dry for 4 days before they friggin worked right. Even for the keys to be made with the chip they cost 75 bux at the local ace hardware. My key is laser cut, meaning only vw can make it, unless you have a laser at your disposal. hahaha!

if that happens again take the keyfob apart and remove the battery and pat everything dry and let it sit overnight.  Just letting it sit will work most times but if the water would have shorted anything out your keyless entry would have likely not survived.  My wife has washed her keys three times now and the last time i had to solder the + battery connector back to the board.  She has to have the cleanest keyfob ever :icon_lol: :icon_lol:

I have heard a good way to dry out electronics is in the refrigerator.

Refrigerators and freezers are also dehumidifiers so they will get rid of moisture in hard to reach places.

Once you dry with a towel, remove the batteries and leave in the fridge for a day or two.

never tried it myself but I haven't soaked any electronics since I heard about it.

I wouldnt try the freezer, moisture under a chip will freeze, expanding and removing said chip..

They drying method I've heard of from a few places is to put your dampened electronic device in a ziplock bag with rice for a few days.  The rice should suck all the moisture out of the electronics.
