I've been seeing some vids on YouTube featuring the GS minus the exhaust or with the pipe cut off before the can.. While i like the sound (at least over the internet) I'm curious as to the potentially negative effects of running with no can at all.. I'm guessing back pressure could be an issue, but at the same time see no difference between running no exhaust and running an open design race can. Any thoughts?
I run mine with the pipe cut right where the stock muffler would fit. Sort of angled up and back. It sounds exactly like the Orange GS you might have seen on the interwebs. Deep, throaty with some good grunt. And, it is loud as you might imagine. I mean LOOOOUUUUUUUUDDDDD!
Other than that, I have not noticed any ill affects so far but I may be riding a time bomb too.
Worst case is it might reduce torque a bit, but I would guess not much.
it would take some torque but prob add to top end by taking away backpressure..engine needs to be constricted at low end, and be able to pass exhaust at higher rates at top end. that's why they make backpressure valve things in some exhausts. i can't remember what they're called, but they open up as the exhaust increases. they're pretty cool.
i would never do hack mine off, simply because the local police like to follow me everywhere when i'm on my bike, because everyone with bikes runs from them. so they harass us. a loud exhaust is just another reason for the nazis to pull me over.
as long as you jet correctly there would be no bad noticeable effects and you would have a bit more power. if you dont jet then you will run lean and lose power every where in the rpm band, not to mention running too lean can burn a piston.
I have a feeling that running without an exhaust would be illegal because of how loud it would be. Check with local authorities before you do the mod. It's not worth a ticket.
The best part is it would scare babies, make dogs bark and set off car alarms!

I absoluely love going around parked cars and setting off alarms! I make special trips to the various parking garages in columbus and just go up and down seeing how many I can get to go off.
So you're why bikers get a bad rap huh?
The rejet is done and the k&n is on. The only reason I even bothered to ask this almost ridiculous question is because i'm wondering how much of a difference between no can and the d&d can is going to be sound and proformance wise is going to be. I know d&d cans are rather loud to start with, but if the noise/proformance difference is minimal I,ve considered riding minus a can until I an afford to get the new one welded on. The welder I had access to at work took a dump and the new one blows right through thin exhaust pipe metal.

yup, I also do wheelies and speed alot.
I do the same things in my car too though, minus the wheelies. but my car is as loud as my bike and I love doing burnouts and going fast. Actually Im worse in my car because my car can go much faster than my gs and will smoke the tires in first and second. I do however try to be responsible, I do race my car at the drag strips near here and participate in autocross.
I actually have a D&D exhaust for an R6. I am needing to polish it back to a nice finish but I had it installed for a while. It only slightly reduces the volume of sound. Overall, it ran right about the same without the exhaust. I have new rear brackets coming and will eventually re-install it. (Likely, permanent.) But while I run without the can, it sounds good but loud. Runs fine.
