I just got back from the motorcycle dealer, was ordering my tires from them. While i was there i decided to pick up an air filter also (since i dont know when mine was changed last).
The guy at the counter looked for the stock one and couldent find any in stock (heh play on words!). So he got out the magical book of parts and looked up in the filters section for GS500, he found a UNI filter that "should" fit. Its a foam one, instead of paper. So, anyway, my question is:
1) Will this filter fit without doing anything fancy? (part number is: NU-2453)
2) Will I NEED to rejet after this? Or does it not change it that much/at all.
One more while im here:
The H-Rated tires are ok right? I dont plan on doing any 130+ crusing so I doubt i'd need the V ones. He said H lasts longer so i went with them. (I have to wait about 4 days for them to get them in from the order place, along with filter).
Thanks for your help!
The UNI is going to fit just fine and re jetting is optional... You can actually control the flow in a UNI by adding more oil or less oil to it... More oil = less flow. However people have had the end cap fall off in the UNI. That would be bad... lets un unfiltered air.
BTW you can wash the stock paper filter in clean gas and dry it and re use it... Not for ever... maybe 2-3 times should be OK. So maybe in 10-15K miles you might want to go K&N ... so you could skip the new filter now, clean yours and get more miles from it and then toss the whole airbox for the K&N.
Cool.

So you just soak the filter in gas? Do I need to blow it off or something with an air compressor?
Little late for not getting filter, they already ordered it, and at 15% restocking fee, I'll probably just keep it around as a backup. Or put it in and keep the stock one around incase of problems.
Swirl it in gas, and dip in an lift out like a tea bag. Then just dry it in air/sun. Blowing might blow a hole in it cos its soft when wetted with gas.
Cool.

I just bought same UNI filter this afternoon, but it doesn't come oiled and the clerk didn't tell me I needed special oil, so what kind of oil should I use on it? SAE40 or what??? I'll wash the paper filter in the meantime.
In another thread i thought i saw srinath mention using dishsoap as the oil. Dont do this untill he gets says something on it though, since im not sure ;) .
Dish soap to clean... Uni oil to oil it... But Lemon Pledge to oil is fine too...
Cool.
