Title: Gas POURING from carb and air box vents
Post by: cjones1344 on March 07, 2010, 12:19:14 AM
So I bought a 92 GS as a project a while back, got it running, then took it back apart to clean the carbs more thoroughly and change the tires.  It sat for a few months in my barn and I just now got around to putting it back together.  I got everything back together and went to crank it, and it cranked with no choke almost first try.  As soon as it cranked though, gas started pouring out of the upper t vent on the carb and the vent for the air box.  Ok, not actually pouring, but it probably was losing a gallon of gas a minute.  The bike then floods and dies.  Thought at first I had hooked my fuel hoses up wrong, but I've checked them several times and according to this http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v443/jcp8832/GS500fuelcocks.jpg they're right.  I just want to ride my bike.  Anybody got any ideas?  Just don't tell me I have to pull the carbs again please.

sounds like the float needles aren't sealing/working for some reason, prolly gonna have to tear it down again. Sorry.

bleh, I am not happy.  The carbs on this bike have given me so much trouble I want to just destroy them.  I look forward to the day I move to a fuel injected bike.....

Fuel injection comes with it's own problems. No more carbs to deal with, but plenty of wires/electrics to sort through. I much prefer working on a bike with carbs.

I know one of the hose diagrams is wrong, and there's another in the wiki that's right. I don't know if the one you just posted is the correct one or not. I just put new hoses on my bike after them being off all winter, plus at one point the filter that's inside my tank fell off of the part it sticks in. I stuck it back in the way it's supposed to go, but I'm not 100% sure if I'm hooked up right. I just plan to not run out of gas until I know for sure so that I don't switch to reserve and see there's nothing left. I don't think it would make the carbs flood though.

Leaks are easy to fix. You're prolly having stuck floats. Sitting and then leaking = stuck floats. I'd shake the bike like a madman on the center stand and see if it stops.
Cool.

i'd stop the bike first, then shake it. shaking while riding isn't safe. HA

+1 on the floats. easy enough to drop the bowls and give it a look-see if you don't want to pull the carbs. the float needle might be damaged/worn at the rubber tip. should be sharp and pointy, not holy or smooshed. :)

Thanks for the quick responses.  You don't have to worry about me riding the bike and shaking it, it won't run for more than 20 seconds because of all the gas pouring into the carbs.  I'll give it a good shake while its running and if that doesn't work I guess popping the carbs off won't be a big deal since I won't have to do anything major to them.

Well ya'll were right, one of the float needles was stuck open.  Got it back together and cranked right up.  Unfortunately it only runs with the choke on, and I found out that is because only the left cylinder is running.  Runs for a while then starts backfiring and dies.  I had this happen when I first was trying to get the bike running, and it went away after the last time I took the carbs apart.  What in the carbs could be causing the right cylinder to not fire?  I've checked the thing a hundred times, and everything is ok; I think that maybe some of the o rings need to be replaced, but could that cause this?  I'm about to just throw my hands in the air and mail the carb to Buddha.  This is my first bike, don't even have my license yet, but I've decided I have no idea what I'm doing with these carbs.

Make sure you carb breather hose isn't blocked.

I feel your pain brother, I was pulling my hair out over my problem which ended up being a simple fix
