Title: 3000 rpm idle on warm engine - 2004 GS500F
Post by: Viperz on March 18, 2010, 05:03:56 PM
Hi all,
Looks like I have a little bit of a problem. My idle rpm is around 1500-1600 rpm and the bike idles fine.

I noticed that after riding for around an hour or so, when I stop at the intersection with clutch pulled in or when I shift to neutral, the rpm go to 3000 rpm and stay there.

Does anyone know what could cause this problem? Thanks!

vac leak. or just running lean. any mods to the bike or carb work?

I found at least 2-3 topics on this and other forums on this problem and there was not a single person who said "yes, this is the solution, yay" :(

The bike is bone stock. How would I look for the vacuum leak?

i know...i just went through this. but if its that new i doubt a vac leak. i would pull carbs and jet with buddhas kit on here, and richen her up. surging like that means its lean. the bike comes lean and with miles im sure it gets worse. rejet. or at least pull carbs, clean, and drill out cap and adjust air/fuel screws

What happens if you ride for an hour and reset your idle when it's revving high?

That is, are you positive the bike's idle was set when it was fully warm?

just set the idle to 1200-1500 when she is FULLY warmed up and the problem will be gone.
trust me! I had the same problem.

The bike is running fine when idling. Even when it's fully warmed up at the beginning (choke closed), the RPM are around 1600-1700. It's only after I ride for like 40 minutes, the rpm will climb up.

I had this issue last year. Once it starts doing it, adjust the idle. If that takes care of it you might just need to run with the choke on for the first 15 mins or so. I tried finding a vac leak by spraying wd40 around the carbs to see if it changes the idle and it didnt.  This worked for me so hopefully that is all you need.

same. I was adjusting the idle screw when a little warm, not hot. the bike takes a while to get up to operating temperature.

I took it on a long run, it was idling at 3000-3500, i adjusted the screw and never looked back.

now just need to replace this chain and sprocket.

It has been very cold lately. Last week, on a warmer day (+5C), I went for a ride for about 40 minutes, and then adjusted the idle rpm. Adjusted idle screw all the way down, and the bike was happily puffing at 1500 rpm stable. Apparently, the weather will finally get warmer later this week (+23C on Thu), I'll go for a ride Wed/Thu and will see how it behaves.

Thanks!

Mmm, for what it's worth I have a stock 2006. I pulled the carbs cleaned the 3 jet's and backed out the air/screw 2-3/4 turns from all the way in. She idle's at about 1400-1500 rpm. Warm up is a 60 second ritual.

1. choke all the way on
2. Within about 10 seconds she flys to 4000 rpm
3. back off the choke a little, she then flys to about 3000 rpm. wait 5 seconds back off again
4. now she is idling at about 2000 rpm, let her sit till it starts to rise again like around 3000 rpm
5. choke off - she is good to go.
Takes about 45 to 60 seconds for this procedure.

That's how mine works anyway. So far so good!

My main problem with this topic, is that when at fully operating temp. Ill idle fine at 1200 or so. But if i rev the revs take too long to come down and hang. they do come down but very slowly. If i adjust the idle screw down so it idles around 800-950. She comes right down perfect after a rev. No hanging or slow come down. Buttttt, itll die or just bog around while idled that low. I cant find a perfect medium and being as anal as i am its very annoying. Especiall with a track day coming up in 2-3 weeks.

did you check for vacuum leaks??

Yeah no leaks. Ive pretty much narrowed it down to float heights. Doing the check with the float drain and clear tubing, my level is a tad lower than the gasket level where it should be. Such a pain to do because you gotta pull the carbs, then back on, check, then if not right all over again. Erg. And nothing but good weather is on the way.
