I am getting ready to replace brake pads, and I am wondering what to do about the brake rotors.
When I do car brakes I always have the rotors and drums turned, but on a motorcycle there does not seem to be much material there to machine. Also, where do you go to machine a MC brake rotor?
I have a micrometer and a dial indicator so I can check specs. If the specs are OK and I have no serious gouges can I just replace the shoes?
Thanks.
yes
Im thinking i have a slightly warped rotor. When i break i get a thrumming feeling in the break lever, like it looses and gains pressure over and over. I think its rotor, but could it be something else? Im replacing the pads in a bout 4 days too, so just wondering if it will do anything bad.
Also, with even just a tiny bit of pressure on the lever, i get a buzzing sound from the front break, only while moving, and if i squeeze harder it goes into the sound i described above. Let me know what you think!
the buzzing is normal, Most often when GSrotors warp, they kinda Dish out like like a sauser. i have 2 of them, one is an EBC cast IRON rotor that the Prev Owner warped in one race, i think his caliper slides were binding therefore pulling the disk to the pads instead of self centering the caliper. if i can figure out a way to unwarp this rotor, i would be happy, but thus far havent found a way to keep it trued. im stashing pennies right now to buy another rotor, but every time i get up to where i think i can do it, bam, need a tire, bam, need pads, bam, electric bill needs paying, Bam, wife and kid are talking about needing to eat this week, I tell you, its maddening.

The lever pulsing under hard braking is not warpage of rotors. Most likely they are a result of thicker and thinner spots in the rotors... its actually a manufacturing defect. Floating brakes and calipers wont actually make too big a deal of a little warpage. Turning may help but usually replacing them is best. I may be able to make them rather cheap out of Stainless steel or regular steel, but figure ~50 pieces to start. I prolly can get it for ~$50 at that price.
Cool.
