Title: Well, THAT sucks
Post by: Paulcet on April 05, 2010, 10:36:10 AM
Went to the garage ready to ride to work and saw this:

Anyone ever seen a tire split like that?  I don't recall running over anything that would do that.  No visible marks to indicate damage or abuse.

You mean, apart from the gash in the tire?

Using my Sherlock Holmes skills...

Looks ridden on. So it happened before your last ride. Most likely wherever you were before coming home. But could have happened a ride or two ago and you only just noticed it now because of the way you happened to park the bike.

As the slice is not on top but a little to the side, I'd say it was done near the top of the tire - where the tire was at the time - and so the knife that was used to do it couldn't get on top and under the rear seat and gear. Such as slicing coming in somewhere near the end of the exhaust pipe. This explains the shallow cut near the center of the tire - no leverage - and why it's at a slight angle to being straight across. Of course, the same kind of angle would result from standing on the left of the bike, leaning and slicing back across and Up towards the slicer - but then the center part of the slice would be deeper.

Are you able to retrace the last few stops and go back to review security footage?

ya that definitely looks like a slash to me i can't think of anything that could split it like that besides someone actually slashing your tire

Thanks, Michael.

I actually didn't think it was maliciously cut.  It looked like the "split" stopped right at the cords, but upon closer inspection, some cords are severed.  Cut.  Slashed.

I lubed the chain on Thursday night, and didn't notice a cut.  Didn't ride on Friday.  Rode to work on Saturday where it stayed in the parking lot for about 3 hours.  Rode home and it sat in the driveway for about 4 or 5 hours.  The pine trees are flowering now, so there is pollen everywhere in my neighborhood.  So I can tell the cut was near the bottom of rotation while it was in my driveway because of where the pollen is coating the wheel.

So I've got the 2nd shift IT guy at work checking the security camera recording.  He's a motorcyclist, so he's sympathetic.

How old is the tire? (manufacture date not how long you've had it)

I've seen an old tire split like that but it was around 12yrs old...

I'm thinking the owner of your company also wants to see the tapes to see if someone is vandalizing employee vehicles on his premises.

Date code is 3608.  I bought and installed it this past September.

They checked the tape, and I was the only one within 5 feet of it on Saturday.

I'd send an email to the manufacturer with your pics. A tire that new isnt supposed to do that
