Title: Compression Check...valve check time?
Post by: kylegod on April 05, 2010, 08:19:57 PM
My bike is 98 and has about 21500 on it. I got it with around 20000 in fall of last year. I just did a compression check and one cylinder has only 11o psi and one has about 117 psi.

Clymers says norming is 140-199...and to service at 114 psi.

I dont know if the valves were ever done. It changed hands alot from what i understand. Im wandering if this is a good place to check. Mind you it runs strong and runs pretty well, although it takes quite a long time to warm up and idle well. Also, because of the low compression, would it be a bad idea to do a track day on april 17th? Because i definitely wont get to the valves before then.

if your valves are tight enough to cause low compression, they could get burned if not adjusted correctly. so probably no tracking till its done.

Checking the valves is a pretty simple saturday project. I'd say just pull the tank off and see how they look this weekend. If they are causing the low compression it would be an easy fix. Otherwise you'll know something else is going on and probably not want to do a track day.

run some seafoam through it, check compression again, and then check the valve clearance.

Thanks...hoping it's valves. I don't wanna do it until it's crappy out though. I don't have shims laying around and will have to order what I need. What's seafoam?
