Title: fork noob question..

my fork seals needed to replaced. so i took it to the nearest reasonable shop.

while replacing my fork seals, they said my forks were installed upside down from a previous job. (i bought the bike used.) no, i dont mean inverted. they are right side up.
has anyone ever heard of this or any components being installed upside down? i looked at the diagram and completely confused about how this could happen.

Yeah, I don't get it either.  Someone who has taken them apart could tell you whether you need to find another shop.

i think there's no way you can install anything in the fork backward beside the spring.

well now one of my fork seals is leaking. i cleaned it off two days ago and havnt rode it since. came outside today and its STILL leaking. not much but there was a drop forming. called the mechanic when i found out the other day, he said it was due to rusting inside. apparently one of my tubes is rusting somewhere inside. funny how he forgot to mention this during the replacement of the seals or when i asked if everything was alright with my bike the day i picked it up and he said everything was fine.

I did my own seals it was a semi-religious experience. That said when I was doing it there was a thousand ways I could have F*D up if I was careless. Being that I am uber paranoid and think any screw up will lead to the loss of my bike or life I was overly careful at every stage. Your mechanic may not have been so careful as it's not his life on the line riding. The seals are recessed in to the dampener ans have to be pulled out by basically punching or drilling a hole through the seal and yanking it. If your mechanic slipped and nicked the tube he pretty much guaranteed the new ones would fail.   A nick on the tube is like a little knife and it will rip up the seal. If you nick the tube your suppose to polish it out or replace it depending on the damage. If the tube had rust on it he should have polished it out or replaced it. Regardless your mechanic is an Idiot and probably didn't know what he was doing. If you payed with a card ask him to make it right or reverse the charges and go to a reputable shop, or dealer and have them do it.
