Title: How to remove front sprocket?
Post by: lilwoody on April 13, 2010, 09:18:39 AM
Figures that my appendix came out on Friday and my Xring DID chain and new sprockets came yesterday. My son is going to help (he's going to be my torque wrench) put it on Thursday. I'm looking at it and it appears there is a small cover just over the sprocket and a larger cover with the clutch cable going into it covering the front of the chain. I'm figuring the larger cover has to be removed. My question is how in the way will the clutch cable be? Does it have to be removed or can the cover just be held to the side with it in place to replace the front sprocket? Any other info will be greatly appreciated too for this job. It seem easy but easy is how knuckles get bloodied and cursing like a sailor becomes necessary.

Super easy.  Pull the small side cover.  Just get a cir-clip ring puller thingy, lol.  I used needle nose pliers but I didn't have the ring puller then.  You can change a sprocket in 5 minutes at most.  Clutch will not intrude.

You described the larger cover as the one with the clutch cable going through it.  That is the one to remove.  And as OCD says, the clutch will not intrude.  Easy.

Just as O.C.D. says,

looking at the left side there are 2 main parts. the large part of the cover (left) covers the alternator while the right cover (with clutch cable going into it) covers the front sprocket. a handful of bolts hold the cover in place, remove them and pull the cover off, it might need a little persuation as theres a small rod that the covers slides onto which has something to do with the clutch.

Cue circlip pliers (or if you're a barbarian like myself, flat blade screwdriver and long nose pliers :tongue2:) and take the circlip off

pull off the old sprocket and install new one!

put it back together (possibly need to clean out all the crud that builds up behind the cover? Whenever i replace a front sprocket theres like 1/2'' - 1'' of dirt in there)

8mm socket for the cover bolts.

10 mm for the shift lever bolt (have to pull shift lever to pull cover)
shift lever bolt has to be fully removed, not just loosened, to get the lever off.

Pull cover, rotate forward, tape if need be, out of your way.

Circlip pliers, pop circlip, pull sprocket.

Grease splines of countershaft, pop on new sprocket, pop on circlip.

If you're remotely normal, there may be a diversion that takes longer than the rest of the process to clean the gook out of the area. Chain lube, rodent food, all sorts of stuff gets up in there and stays.

Incase 4 people telling you wasn't enough, I figured I'd get in on it.

Pull off the shift lever, the cover, replace the sprocket, and replace the cover and shifter.  :icon_mrgreen:

if your leaving the chain on youll need to loosen the rear axle and get slack in the chain

In his original post he said his new sprocket and DID X-ring chain came in so im assuming he is looking to replace the chain too and if it's the stock chain that is still on there its an endless chain (well at least mine was) so someone may want to give some insight on how to remove that too as i think my way of taking the old chain off may have not be the easiest  ;) . i removed the back tire, because i was getting a new one on so it made everything easiest to do so, then took a grinder to a link and basically smashed a link off with a metal mallet and a chisel type thing (best description i have of it).  maybe someone has an easier way to remove the original chain

Dremel tool with a heavy duty abrasive wheel got my chain sliced apart in less than a minute. Easy and fun.

Also, I agree the front sprocket is super simple for me to remove, and I have very little bike knowledge.

Bolt cutters.

...and a side note, I didn't want my last post to get too cluttered... You have to take that pinch bolt completely out of your shift lever. You'll see why when you get the lever out, but you can't loosen it and slide it off, you have to completely unscrew the bolt before the lever will slide off.

I wear my chains out so completely that I can loosen the nut on the rear wheel and slacken the chain adjusters, this lets me pull the chain off of the front sprocket  :thumb:

Of course it tends to be a close thing, I wasnt lucky this time and my rear sprocket ate itself before i could get the cash for a chain and sprocket kit!

Thanks guys, this one going on is the third chain. Last one was a DID O ring. I didn't change the sprockets and it only lasted 12K. The stock one went about 14K so I hoping this X ring will give me at least 15.
